Was atheism the cause of communism, or was it a means to an end? Either way atheists have a lot to answer for. Communism has resulted in the deaths of 100 million people. The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin come as the result of godlessness. If only they had some moral code in their lives, then maybe this would not have happened.

It was just a mean to an end.
Communism has resulted in the deaths of 100 million people.
EXACTLY! Communism, not atheism.
The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin come as the result of godlessness.
Citation needed.
The standard answer to "Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot" is "Franco, Torquemada, Pinochet". Of course, crusaders also come to mind.
As a frenchman, I'm sad to say we have a few very bad events in our history : crusade against the albigensis(kill them all, God will sort them better than we can), St-Barthelemy(Kill them all, 30 000 in one single night), and even the trial against Joan of Arch(led by religious authorities on false premises, and broken decades later).
An economic system (any economic system) does not equal "we just don't buy the bullshit you're selling."
Face it, you're just mad that we're not easily buying the "drugs" you're selling...and that makes you mad -to the point where your only defense mechanism is denial and demonization of that which you do not understand.
The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin came as a result of Marxist-Leninism, in which religion and atheism are part of the superstructure, not the base on which society functions. Before speaking your brains about communism, it's best to find out what it is, United White States of America. BTW, the moral compass of Christian, white America (Trail of Tears, slavery, segregation etc.) also lives a bit to be desired.
The religion of communism resulted in the deaths of 100 million people. The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin come as the result of god-bothering. If only they had some moral code in their lives, then maybe this would not have happened.

'United States of White America', eh? Never mind your argument...:

...your existence is invalid.
--EDIT--
@Dr. Razark
And a question or three that should also be asked of those who shout & scream about any possible connections Communism has with Atheism: Please point out verbatim in the Bible where it states that Jesus charged people for his healing services? And did he say to the 5,000 that they must pay for the loaves & fishes prior to consumption (as per supermarket notices)? Also, the little matter of his turning the water to wine at that wedding: did he compensate any & all wine merchants in the locale, for their loss of trade...?
If Christianity is as Capitalistic as they always maintain, with no exceptions to any & ALL rules, and no matter the person(s) involved. Aye, there's the entire argument-annihilating rub indeed.
"Was atheism the cause of communism...?"
Acts 4:32-35
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
If only they had some moral code in their lives
Says the guy whose name is "United States of White America". The same "White America" that sent countless native Americans to their graves, permanently kicked them off their land, and carved a giant set of heads into a sacred mountain.
The only reason religious wars, pogroms, expansion of Islam, etc. don't have an equally high body count is because the population density was a lot less before the 19th century, and because of the efficacy of 20th century weapons.
"Was atheism the cause of communism, or was it a means to an end?"
Means to an end.
"The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin come as the result of godlessness"
Well with the godly ruling, we had inquisitions, people burned for being "witches", hung on same accusation, crusades, and other forms of persecution.
"If only they had some moral code in their lives, then maybe this would not have happened."
I actually agree with this. It is true. but then again you could say the same when it came to theocratic rulers too.
The poverty that capitalism creates has caused more deaths than those of the state-capitalist régimes of the 20th century. It is the rich, who keep unused money and resources to theirselves, that keep the poor in poverty. Approximately ten million children in capitalist countries die from this every year.
The policies of Mao, Pol Pot, and Stalin differed radically. I have no idea about the moral codes they lived by except to infer them from the policies they pursued and the statements they made - just like anybody else.
I also do not understand how atheism is even relevant here.
Except that Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin were not despots in the service of atheism. They may have been atheists who were despotic, but their atheism cannot be logically tied to despotism.
P.S. Your user name speaks volumes about your character.
For heaven's sake, communism is an economic system, like capitalism. Atheism is the absence of belief in a magical deity, and nothing more. A country (or person) could be communist and still religious, or capitalist and yet secular. If anything, out of capitalism, communism and socialism, capitalism is the farthest from the alleged teachings of Christ, and socialism the nearest.
Was atheism the cause of communism, or was it a means to an end?
Neither really. Marx believed that religion was a pleasing balm that prevented you seeing the horror of the world (remember, opium was considered a good thing when he was writing) and that being awakened to that reality would naturally lead you to abandon religion.
If only they had some moral code in their lives, then maybe this would not have happened.
Hitler was a Christian (well, claimed to be anyway).
if we have to answer for those people, then you have to answer for the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the Thirty Years War, the deaths of the native North and South Americans, etc etc.
And there is a lot more reason to blame Christianity for those then there is to blame atheism for communist massacres.
The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin came as the result of megalomania. Stalin was studying to become a priest; he had all the "moral code" in his life that he could wish for. Pol Pot went to a Catholic school. Mao had a very strict disciplinarian father and a Buddhist mother.
(According to Wikipeida.)
Those kinds of Communism weren't really atheistic (yeah, a No True Scotsman, I know), as the public were pushed and encouraged to more or less worship the Dear Leader.
Let me be clear about this "The policies of Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin come as the result of godlessness" were because they abandoned Zeus.
Just as valid. Your Christian America has no high ground and your Christian history matches them at every level.
You mean moral code like this?
Kill those that work on Sunday
Stone disobedient children
Kill entire towns if anyone within worships another god
Kill your wife if she's not a virgin on your wedding night
Kill those that wear mixed fabrics
Kill those that eat shellfish
Kill all of the Midianite men, women, and children, but keep the 32000 virgins for you to rape later
Keep slaves, and you can beat the crap out of them for any reason as long as they don't die in a day or two
Sounds pretty moral to me.
Confused?
