Second, evolution isn't a "the next step up from ape is human" linear progression! "Monkeys" are still evolving, and have evolved, and will continue to evolve into something that is not like us, but distinct and suited for their environment. We are cousins in the phylogenetic tree, no one better than the other. Asking why monkeys don't turn into humans is like asking why you are unable to give birth to your own brother. Hopefully, you can see why you would give birth to a child that is distinct from your own siblings.

Second, why are fundies so unable to grasp that evolution is not an instantaneously observable process?
I'm all for my daughter experiencing/learning about other religions so she can form her own beliefs even though her father and I aren't religious ourselves. But it scares me SO MUCH that she'll want to and one of these freaks of nature will get their claws into her. She's incredibly bright for her age (not even two yet), and I'd hate to think of them warping her little mind with such ignorant bullshit.
And my husband wonders why I insist on going if/when she discovers a church she wants to belong to. At least the first few times, so I can make sure it's not full of *these* people.

Why would monkeys evolve into human beings? We have a common ancestor, tens of thousands of years ago. Evolution works v e r y s l o w l y. It has taken over 65 milion years for all kinds of mamals to evolve from a hedgehog-looking creature. If you look at more simple lifeforms, like virus and bacteria, then you can see the evolution at work. MRSA for instace, as we have gravely over-used antibiotics the bacterias have mutated to avoid being affected by them. And now we have very little left to defend ourselves with. And no, praying seems to have no effect either.
