Um... a few things.
1) How did the "orphan pauper boy" learn of the lord in the first place? If he was raised in a Christian orphanage or something, he would have been taught to read so that he could read the Bible. He also wouldn't be out on the streets begging.
2) I see no evidence of "The Lord" blessing anybody in this comic. Unless that's Jesus himself just out of sight to the left in the third panel. Otherwise, the boy was blessed by a person who chose to help him. Unless "The Lord" has no respect for Free Will....
3) I see nothing wrong with a rich (or even not-so-rich) person adopting a child in such obvious need. Is the author really suggesting that the man was asking the child to abandon his faith before he would help? I honestly don't think such a monster exists. However, there ARE people who will blatantly only help Christian children. You don't have to look very hard to find them.
4) Since the child/author seems to know all about "The Lord" (*rolls eyes*), he should know that "The Lord" helps those who help themselves, that an offer of generosity should not be spat upon, etc, etc, etc.
5) You can't "teach yourself to read". Learning to read and write a language is an entirely different matter than simply learning to speak it. Immersing yourself in another language will teach you the basics in a matter of days or weeks and a common mastery can be achieved in a few months. Not so with reading and writing. The huge percentage of illiterate people even in America can attest to that. Learning to read and write your first language takes years of serious study. Letters, words, and grammar are the least of it. And to attempt to tackle the Bible, of all things as a first book is just retarded. Archaic words and usages, ridiculously befuddled composition, and the fact that every passage has three others that directly conflict with it are just some of the problems with the Bible as a book.
6) What, exactly, is the moral of the story in this comic? That if you "stay with the Lord", you'll die poor, ignorant, and homeless? That your life will amount to nothing? It isn't even mentioned if the child was rewarded after death. So far as I can tell, the boy made the wrong decision with the rich man. Sure, he gave what spare money he could to help his fellow poor people, but if he had taken the rich man's offer, he could have gotten a real education, gotten a real job, and donated so much more to charity.
Who knows, maybe he would have grown up to be the next Norman Borlaug, the greatest man who ever lived. Norman Borlaug was a biologist who saved literal BILLIONS (with a fucking 'B') from starvation with his genetically engineered crops. Crops that grew better in harsh climates, that produced a larger harvest, etc.
As a pauper, he may have bought a few homeless guys dinner. As a biologist, he could have saved billions of people from starvation. Even if he had to forsake his "Lord" to take that opportunity, it would still be the right choice. If "the Lord" damns a man like Norman Borlaug for being an atheist, then "the Lord" is a monster.
