<article about witnessing to atheists>
While atheism is the ultimate intellectual suicide, I can understand why some people are tempted to believe that there's no God. The previous night I had listened to a CNN report that scientists had discovered why human beings are more intelligent than animals. I was intrigued with their assumption, and listened to how scientists believed that 20 million years ago we developed larger brains. They predicted that the human brain will continue to grow, giving us larger heads. This will mean that future generations will see more Cesarean births. I admired the newscaster's ability to remain straight-faced.

Remember that line in Fight Club, when Brad Pitt asks Ed Norton who he'd fight if he could fightone?
Ray Comfort, man. Fuckin' Ray Comfort.
I'm sure Ray would have admired how I kept a straight-face as he talked about how the banana was designed.
BTW: The ultimate intellectual suicide is describing oneself as a creation scientist. (This also just happens to be the perfect example of an oxymoron.)
Er, that should be "if he could fight anyone," not "if he could fightone."
Keyboard, man. Fuckin' keyboard.
Well, that wasn't a very sharp analysis on part of the CNN. There isn't that strong a correlation between brain size and intelligence.
Two examples of species with larger brains than modern humans: Dolphins and Neanderthals.
There are all sorts of theories as to how we became this smart. None of them seem to give a satisfactory explanation to utter morons like Ray Comfort here.
Freboy: And with the dawn of civilisation, the direction of selective pressure, the mechanism of evolution, might have changed. That our ancestors developed a somewhat bigger brain does not mean it will continue in the future. Evolution is not a simple mechanincal system that, once accelerated, will slide the same direction forever.
So, it's stupid Ray and stupid CNN.

Why not go with Kent Hovind he influences so many other minds than Ray Comfort.
Of course, Ray, why elephants or Jiraffes are not Nobel Prizes, is something that goes beyond your understanding. And well, wasn't the earth 6000 years old, according to you?
ah, such careful choosing of words in an attempt to twist matters...
We do not "believe there is no god". We simply *do not believe* there is one.
Just like you do not believe in santa, the tooth fairy, the trix rabbit, the greek or norse pantheons or any of those other mythical beings. We just happend to connect the dots one step further and notice all that stuff those priests and clerics and whatnot were trying to feed us was no different from all those other mythologies yours tooks most of its ideas from...
I thought it was more of the percentages of the brain power being used . that gave us our intelligence
Doesn't the average human being use like say 3% and the average gold fish use 40 percent.
Because in terms of percentage and human vs goldfish 3% of jet engine (the human brain )is still stronger than 40 % of wax candle( The gold fish brain)
I just kind of though that how it worked .Our brains size is about as big as need to be there is enough room for improvement with is current size.In other words we are not going to evolve into (gulp) purely intellectual being with huge giant heads and tiny beedy blind eyes on weak feeble bodies and useless arm and leg appendages , like in the song in the year 2525 .
The problems with the evolution of human brains outstripping pelvic openings has been known for years. Already, the human head barely fits through the pelvic opening, and sometimes the tailbone has to be broken to get the baby out. The Arab sheep herders who wrote the Bible noticed thousands of years ago that humans have a lot more trouble giving birth than most other animals. That's how they came up with that nonsense about God cursing Eve with difficult delivery.
Cesarean birth is a more recent invention. The evolutionary solution has been for babies to be born more and more prematurely. I recall someone estimating that based on our size compared to other animals, our gestation period should be around 12-13 months instead of nine. That's why our babies are almost totally helpless at birth, as compared to say a calf or a foal.
"atheism is the ultimate intellectual suicide"
As if belief in 6-day creation, life after death and the forgiving of sins, both past and future, through the murder of an innocent person is a well-reasoned position.
"How is this a fundamentalist? hes just speakinghis mind... He actually ade a good point, in my oppinion.."
And... what good point would that be? That he's an intellectual midget?
"I admired the newscaster's ability to remain straight-faced."
Unlike, say, Kirk Cameron watching you peel a banana.
@ NMGH: "How is this a fundamentalist? He's just speaking his mind... He actually made a good point, in my opinion..
Maybe I misunderstood the OP. I took it to mean that he thought the idea that evolution caused ever-increasing brain size was baloney and (given the forum he posted on) by extension, evolution was baloney, too. Enlighten us further on your objections to this interpretation.
Hey it's Ray Comfort, aka bananna-brain, do you really expect anything intelligent from that clown? Is he aware that he is really suggesting that as brains become larger, belief in God decreases?PS Atheism is NOT the ultimate intellectual suicide, unquestioning BLIND BELIEF in anything, that is intellectual suicide.
All people quoted here give their opinions. He's quoted as fundy because he's literarilly incapable of making a logical connection between his thesis and the body of evidence he provides. In other words, a doesn't have anything to do with b. In fact, televangelist in general and Ray Comfort in particular, are fond of this technique. To begin with, because many of them are usually highschool or college dropouts who, in their pursuit for an argument, don't stop and think. Second, because most of the people who read this type of material, or watch it, or hear it, are in that situation or even worse. Look at the demographics, and you're likely to find rednecks over 65 who vote republican and don't have gone beyond 8th or 10th degree. They don't expect a PhD or Nobel Prize to read it and convert.
Huh. I think he must have misinterpreted what he saw on the news (either that or someone on CNN was drunk when they wrote a story). There's no longer a strong evolutionary pressure for humans to develop "larger brains."
Oh, and as for humans being more intelligent than animals... we still can't understand what those dolphis are saying yet, so I think the jury's still out :)
Actually, PhantasyElementz, I hear they've actually decoded a significant portion of dolphin language.
For some reason, they seem to be saying "So long, and thanks for all the fish.
[/obligatory Hitchhiker's Guide joke]
Provided the prediction is accurate, that will only happen over thousands of years, and we have no idea whatsoever of the advances in medicine even a mere hundred years in the future. Also, what Ray said has no relation at all with atheism.
Nope, not checking whether the banana as we know it is designed by humans before you go spouting that it's designed by God, that's the ultimate intellectual suicide.
The temptations to not believe in gods lies in the fact that there is no evidence for the existence of any of them, and everything in the world can be explained without magical interference.
I think you have the figures wrong. Wasn't it 2 million years ago that we split from the other great apes?
Are you sure you were not listening to a program about Ms Auel's books about the Clan of the Cave Bear? She had an idea that neanderthals died out partly because their brains and heads were too large. As there were no Cesarean posibilities back then, some of the women died while trying to give birth.
“While atheism is the ultimate intellectual suicide,”
No, that’s gotta be creationism, Mr. Crocoduck.
“I can understand why some people are tempted to believe that there's no God.”
No, you really don’t.
“The previous night I had listened to a CNN report that scientists had discovered why human beings are more intelligent than animals.”
And yet we are animals.
Are you sure you understood the report?
"I was intrigued with their assumption, and listened to how scientists believed that 20 million years ago we developed larger brains.”
There, uh, there weren’t great apes 20 million years ago. WHO developed bigger brains?
“They predicted that the human brain will continue to grow, giving us larger heads.”
Continue? Those weren’t ‘us’ in the previous sentence.
"This will mean that future generations will see more Cesarean births.”
Do life forms typically evolve in a direction that makes it harder or more dangerous to reproduce?
"I admired the newscaster's ability to remain straight-faced.”
Ah, the smug snark of the complete moron, talking down to someone on a subject he cannot even lie about convincingly.
Confused?
