[On boycotting the olympics]
The Olympic Games are yet another one. Given China’s abysmal human rights record of persecution, no thanks. I cannot understand why any athlete would want to compete there. An example of how our athletes’ are not allowed to share their faith is they can only bring along their own bible (no more for distribution) and must keep it in their room.

Boo hoo, you can't proselytize. Still, I agree with the general sentiment, but just remember, the same applies to Muslims and the Qu'ran (as far as I know).
You understand, of course, that China's record on human rights abuses is matched by dear old US of A since GWB became president.
As your Jesus allegedly said, " He who is without sin, cast the first stone."
We lost the moral high ground, you dummy. Boycotting the Beijing Olympics would just make us look as stupid as our current president.
Well I do agree that the Olympics should not be in China, due to the same reasons Roland posted there. I mean wtf is going on with that? But the bible thing is only for your own protection, You try distributing bibles in china, you'll get shot.

I honestly can't say I disagree with this.

This, however, I violently disagree with. We're guests in their country. How would you feel if a guest in your house started passing out The Book of Mormon to the people there?
You know, this dude would have a point if the olympians were competing in a major sports even that took most of their lives to prepare, and all of their energy to compete in. But yeah, I mean if, in the midst of all the preparation and competing, they have time to hand out Bibles on the side-street I'd be fucking surprised.
@ Mat
Sorry, sir, but I don't think that way. If I killed 5 people and you killed 10 doesn't make me less guilty than you. We are both murderers.
Arguing degrees of guilt is pure sophistry.
"If I can't buttonhole people and rant about Jesus to them, I don't want to compete."
I can just hear a chorus of athletes saying that, can't you?
I was like "where's the fundie?" and then BAM!
I think the athletes have more important things to worry about, like winning medals.
On a related note, I once 'enjoyed' an email discussion with überfundie Tom Carder from Capalert (if you haven't seen it, it is hysterically funny). He argued that the olympics are sinful because women wear revealing clothing...
*sigh*
Perhaps because the athletes dared to dream of being the best in the world at their sport, and the Olympics are the traditional world-class games, I don't know.
I don't think bible-waving will ever make the Olympics, but I'd like to see the US bible-waving team meet up with their Muslim counterparts.
Stage this event in the Colosseum....
Obviously this guy just wants to whine about not having the ability to throw bibles at people.
However, he is 100% correct. China most certainly shouldn't have gotten the Olympics to begin with. And yes, curtailing religious freedom is one (perhaps the least horrifying, in fact) of their many human rights violations.
It's actually a lot more disturbing that China won't allow anyone with "mental disease" into the games.
But China does have an abysmal human rights record. China does also not recognize a freedom of religion. I don't think this is fundy so much as just accurately describing the Chinese government.
As a member of the unpopular non-religious minority, I am really glad that America's government recognizes my religious freedoms.
From economic point of view:
they are the country with the highest growth in the world, so they must be doing something right.
From "human rights" point of view: Chinese government terrorises it's own citizens. US government terrorises foreign citizens AND it's own citizens, under the guise of "War on terror". So, what's the point?
Beeblebrox, your analogy is not very good. It would be better if the host would stop you from expressing different political/religious opinions than those that he shares. And of course, then anyone would understand that the person in question is a complety fascist. I'm actually rather surprised at how many here think it's complety ok to stop people from giving bibles to those who want them. I dislike every religion in the world and hope them to be gone one day, but in a price of freedom? No thanks.
Confused?
