Televangelist Pat Robertson had some eyebrow-raising advice for a woman who wrote complaining of a cheating husband.

"I've been trying to forgive my husband for cheating on me," the viewer writes. "We have gone to counseling, but I just can't seem to forgive, nor can I trust. How do you let go of the anger? How do you trust again?"

While Robertson's co-host called infidelity "one of the ultimate betrayals," the controversial host disagreed.

"Here's the secret: stop talking about the cheating," Robertson advised.

"He cheated on you. Well, he's a man."

Robertson also suggested the writer be forgiving of her husband's transgressions and the "tendency of man."

"Does he provide a home for you to live in," Robertson said. "Does he provide food for you to eat? Does he provide clothes for you to wear? Is he nice to the children... Is he handsome?"

"Recognize also, like it or not, males have a tendency to wander a little bit," he added. "What you want to do is make a home so wonderful that he doesn't want to wander."

I used to be a fundy christian and the primary thing I learned while immersed in this destructive BS is this: as a woman, there is nothing you can ever do well or correctly. My pastor gave me a copy of 'The Fascinating Woman' and insisted I read it because he felt that I wasn't submissive enough to my husband. Yet, when my husband decided he didn't want to go to that church and suddenly stopped, it was my fault because of the bit in the bible that says a non-believing man is saved by his believing wife. I was informed that it was my responsibility to put pressure on him to go to church.

In other words, I was to be an assertive leader and a Stepford Wife. Contradictions abound.

A woman has no voice in a christian marriage, but will find herself blamed for whatever evil shit her husband does. If he cheats or beats her and the children, it's because she is not properly submitting to her husband's will and to god's.

It must be nice to be a christian man; your woman is not only chattel but a convenient scapegoat for whatever evil you do. She has no say in her own relationship and you don't even have to make pretense at being a decent human being.

If Christianity is true, I have no doubt that Pat Robertson and his ilk will be on the express train straight to hell. The spirit of everything he says is less in line with the words of Christ and more reflective of what was expressed by the Pharisees, the group that Christ criticized the harshest. If, someday, the Antichrist is to come, I have no doubt that he would be exactly what fundies expect of Christ during his "second coming." The Christianity of fundies is absolutely Satanic to its core.

If Christ came, he came for the poor, the hungry, the suffering, and the downtrodden. He didn't associate with the Pat Robertsons of the day; he ate with women and beggars and prostitutes and cripples. He forgave the adulterous woman because, in her society, she was powerless; I don't think he would have forgiven an adulterous pharisee like Pat Robertson.

I bet Pat thinks that if a man wanders, it's just because he's a man and his woman didn't make a nice enough home, but if a woman wanders, she's an evil-harlot-sinner-slut-whore.

What Pat said here ought to be offensive to both men and women. Men, because he's basically saying that we can't control our lust and will hump anything that moves, and women because he's claiming that it's the woman's fault if her husband sleeps around.

But I secretly love hearing them say things like this, because each time it renders their religion just a little more irrelevant. And yet they just can't keep from spewing idiocy. I'll just sit here and eat the popcorn while watching the show.

Man cheats, well if the woman wasn't such a soul sucking shrew, made him feel welcome, put out and made him some sandwiches, well he wouldn't have strayed. Shame, woman, shame.

Woman cheats, she's a heartless whore who doesn't know what she has. The man gives and gives, and THIS is how she thanks him? Tar and feather the bitch before tossing her out on her ass. Shame, woman, shame.

Not to mention, it's funny how women are both irrational creatures whoare governed solely by their silly emotions, and need a man to govern them and guide them, and cunning, conniving whores who seek to tempt men, and use their feminine wiles to control them. Of course both are reasons why they must be locked up in the kitchen, under a man's firm control, so I suppose it's moot.

Well, I'm not sure that whales have a concept of morality, sexual or otherwise, but dolphins are famous for being the rapists of the sea. As for orcs, their idea of sexual immorality may differ from the human one (particularly in "rape and pillage" situations), but that depends on the exact setting. Orks, on the other hand, are asexual humanoids who reproduce by spores, so they are simply unable of sexual immorality in any form (well, I guess converting to pacifism might qualify, as their spores are mostly emitted in battle and at death, but that's a purely theoretical consideration, as they are also fundamentaly unable of pacifism) [/off-topic, sleep-deprivation fuelled ramblings]

Don't forget that in Fundieland a woman is simultaneously a silly, bubbleheaded creature that can scarely be trusted to get herself dressed in the morning and a man-eating jezebel, scheming the many ways she will use her feminine wiles to cause the good, pure, chaste fundie men to stumble in their pure, chaste ways. I don't think there's anything senile or stupid about ol' Jackass Pat spouting this kind of BS. It's actually quite cunning and insidious.

Pat's brand of Christianity preys on people's vulnerabilities to keep them in line and that's exactly what he's doing here. Most people who get cheated on, even if they intellectually know it wasn't their fault, still have moments of doubt where they ask themselves "What could I have done to prevent this?" and "What does he/she (the other man or other woman) have/ give my spouse that I don't?"

By pulling out this whole "make a home so wonderful he won't cheat on you" crap, Pat's feeding the self-doubt this woman has more than likely already been feeling. Because weak and self-doubting people are easier to control and that's what Pat is all about.

The moment when you realize that Robertson is a hypocrite, promoting double standards for women subjugation, and imposing stereotypes on both partners. So now inverse the roles and repeat the same arguments. Then instead of saying "it's life", admit that it could also be improved, people are not obliged to endure a disrespectful partner forever. The assumption that she should be stuck at home also says a lot. It's true that it's more difficult for her if she has no freedom, was already tricked into not being able to be independent, subjugated; that's not rightful, it's harmful.
