Is Christianity really sexually repressive? Let's consider the facts, shall we.
Take for instance the Puritans. They are held up as the model of sexual repressiveness, right? But most people tend to ignore the fact that Puritans had large families of 8 plus children. That sounds like they are sexually liberated to me. A good example is the Duggar family of Arkansas . [...] That is a couple that had sex at least 19 times. Who were the critics of this sexually free family? None other than single, free thinking secular progressives who basically want to have their cake and eat it too. Columnist Mark Morford wrote a bigoted piece decrying the Duggars as freakish dullards with too many babies to feed.
But Morford is a classic example of the so-called liberated free thinker. [...] But remember, "free thinker" is really just a code word for sexual deviant: a pervert. When secular atheists boast that they are "free thinkers" they want you to believe they have opened minds and consider many areas of intellectual pursuits. This is a dishonest picture. In truth, the idea with the term "free thinker" is of a person longing to be free to have as much sex with whomever (or whatever) he or she desires with reckless abandon and impunity, and without fear of judgment from societal norms.
Those fuddy dudes, like Christian moralists, who tell individuals to control their sexual impulses; teaches faithful, sexual commitment to one person of the opposite sex; and maintains a since of propriety with those restrictive age of consent laws, are frowned upon by "free thinkers" as being "dinosaurish" and unenlightened.

Fun fact; The huge amount of pregnancies that women were expected to have were because of, not only to replenish numerous deaths in childhood, but also to effectively imprison a women and cut of her bodily autonomy.

Josh Buggar. Ashley Madison. NEXT!
Yet another clueless fundie who thinks it's only about the parents. The Duggars oppressed their children's sexual development, teaching them that it's something evil and dirty, up until the day you marry the partner your parents handpick for you, then suddenly it's expected of you.
And they wonder why they find themselves in the situation they're in today.
Perfect time to use the duggers. After we found out he was an incestuous pedophile, we know know he paid to cheat on his wife too. I know this is a double edged sword, but I congratulate the hackers that took down ashley maddison/established men. Those fuckers deserve it.
@ThEcOnFuSeD
A pedophile is someone of age who is attracted to the underage, or who uses their anger or sexual oppression to target underage boys or girls because they are easy targets. Josh is not a pedophile. He was simply a boy going though puberty who experimented in the worst possible way. That's why naked mags and the internet exist.
Having sex 19 times, in a 20 year marriage, is not very much sex. The fact that you would trot that number out there makes me wonder if you have ever been in a relationship:
(1) I would guess that for the first year or two, at least, it is pretty average to have sex over 19 times per month.
(2) People trying to conceive usually have sex more than once.
(3) what people object to about the Duggars is not the sex. It is the decision to have 19 children (far too many) for ulterior reasons: they hate modern society and want to overwhelm it with huge numbers if children who think like them. I think it would be nasty to find out that was why I was brought into the world: not because I was wanted in my own right, and by a person who has decided, before conception, what I should do with my life.
But remember, "free thinker" is really just a code word for sexual deviant: a pervert.
Doesn't that make Josh Duggar a free thinker?
"That is a couple that had sex at least 19 times."
Wow, they're just wild and crazy guys aren't they?
A good example is the Duggar family of Arkansas
A family whose father thinks making his son work on a farm for a summer can atone for him sexually assaulting his younger sister: not the best exemple of not being sexually repressive.
No one claims fundamentalists are opposed to having sex once in a while to make babies. But they're often repressive when it comes to having sex purely for fun. In fact, they often don't like people doing anything for fun. Smell those sour grapes, anyone?
I'm a sexual deviant? Well somebody better deliver a whole lot of deviance soon or I'm asking for my money back.
Oh, you might want to drop the Duggar example for a while.
"like Christian moralists, who tell individuals to control their sexual impulses; teaches faithful, sexual commitment to one person of the opposite sex;"
Like the hypocrite christian poster child for abstinence-only education, Bristol Palin? TWO kids, she's not even married, and paid well over $250,000 to spout the abstinence-only bullshit she obviously doesn't follow. Looks like what she's abstaining from is controlling her sexual impulses, condom use and marriage.
I guess this is yet another type of "traditional christian marriage".
I'd rather be a pervert than a christian.
As far as the Buggars go, everyone knew that they were hiding some massive skeletons in their walk in closet, & it was simply a matter of time until one came out. Now 2 have come out, both involving the same hypocritical, asslicking male butterface Buggar. That entire family is fucked up, & this is simply more proof. Prepare for more!
I love schadenfreude; it tastes like white chocolate.
And where is our newest troll, Jerry the friendly neighborhood basket case? I was hoping to see some stupid hilarity from him about this.
Christianity is not necessarily repressive to the desire to procreate, but it is to the act itself, hence the hysteria over individuals engaging in various consensual sex acts that are seen as icky by the dogmatic preachers. Heck, my Grandma had to be 'churched' after giving birth in order to be purified, so even in this regard the church has been archaic in its view.
While you're rallying against sexual perversion, you are apologising for a family that did their very best to cover-up their son's sexual molestation in order to protect their public reputation and engage Josh in a supposed punishment that wasn't fit for the act, even for someone young. Your ambivalence towards this highlights that you are more in line with your warped definition of free thinker than any actual free thinking atheist.
All it proves is that those Christians think that other people shouldn't be having sex. But it's not procreational sex they're upset about, it's recreational sex. And just about anything else that's fun.
And I don't think right now's a good time to be holding up the Duggar family as an example of morality and virtue.
- "Sugar, there's a difference between espousing moral relativism and believing that someone who talks a big game and then does the immediate opposite is a hypocrite. What do they even teach you in home schooling?"
Well baby doll, why do you the atheist care about what Josh Duggar does? or if he's a hypocrite? If everything is relative, who cares? Is he not just fulfilling his genetic destiny to get as much of his offspring into the next generation?
Seems to be a major disconnect between what atheists generally claim they believe and the faux outrage they generate when a religious person sins. What they teaching you there in public school these days?
Simple. I'm not an atheist, I'm a pagan. As for genetic destiny? Horseshit. What you put into the universe comes back threefold, and you just wasted three lines spewing a metric fucktonne of ignorance into the universe.

"Is Christianity really sexually repressive?"
...yes, Fred. NEXT!
The Puritans were farmers and lived in a time when only 1 or 2 children would even live to adulthood. So having a big family made economical and social sense. And 1 out of 3 bride was pregnant on their wedding day (including a Founding Father)
The Duggars are so sexually reptessed that they won't even kiss till their wedding day or even hold hands. They are not seen as normal or mainstream which is why they're criticized.
"who basically want to have their cake and eat it too"
That's the Duggars, people who pretend their better, raise their kids better, even though it's shown they aren't.
Damage Control, where many tried to uphold that act even as the Quiverfull movement admitted many cases like this.
Just liars.
Confused?
