I hate pornography because it has taken away my freedom.
What a load of horseshit. You are responsible for your own thoughts and actions, quit looking for a fucking boogeyman to blame.
It serves to remind me that western culture is no longer my home because I no longer move freely in it. Last century, as I tried to live a life worthy of the Lord
If you think pornography is either confined to western society, or strictly a recent phenomena then you are mistaken. Pornography has been around for thousands of years and is found in world round.
I could walk into a newsagency, buy the paper, and walk out again without my ungodly thoughts being fuelled.
Millions of people do so everyday without out so much as registering the porn much ess becoming overly obsessed with it.
Someonethe government!was helping me, by not allowing material I didn't want to see to be displayed.
Boo Hoo. Big brother's not there to solve your problems. Grow up. Take responsibility for yourself, don't sit there and whine like a coward.
But today, the relaxation of the censorship laws has meant steady erosion of my freedoms
Bullshit. No one, nowhere, has or can reasonably expect to have, the freedom to never find yourself offended.
I love film, but the proliferation of pornography has meant that I need to check every film I see carefully.
Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that you can't tell whether or not a film is porn beforehand?
I love the inner city, but the proliferation of sex shops have meant that I now have to keep accountable to friends at home about where I have spent my time.
If you lack the self restraint to avoid going to a sex shop, then how is that someone else's problem? Are you mentally deficient or lacking in your cognitive faculties? If not, then how is your obsession with porn anyones problem but your own?
I love literature, but pornography has limited my freedom to avoid reading what I don't want to read.
Bullshit. You can put the book down just as easily as you can turn the channel on the TV when there is something you don't want to see.
And newsagencies. Newsagencies! Those most normal of placesthe place we go to buy our paper, our cool drinks and our bus ticketshave become places that cause me to pray before I enter. And, once I have prayed and rallied my heart to heaven, I must buy my paper in the manner of an Israeli Commando Missionget in and get out as quickly as possible. Perhaps one day, I shall have to forgo my beloved copy of the Weekend Australian altogether.
You have a rather unhealthy obsession with porn. That is, however, your responsibility to deal with, not the responsibility of the government to force everyone else to deal with. Grow up and take responsibilty for yourself instead of expecting everyone else to do it for you.
The relaxation of censorship has not meant freedom for me, and a furthering of my rights
Once more, you are not guranteed the right to not be tempted or offended. Relaxing of censorship is meant to further the freedom of speech and the press, not to protect you from your obsessions. Should a cutter expect to be guranteed a world without sharp objects, or an alcoholic a world where no one drinks because he can't control himself?
Those of us who wish to avoid pornography (not only Christians, but also Muslims, some feminists, and a host of other groups one would think a pluralistic society would be quick to listen to) have had our freedom exchanged for the freedom of the pornographer and his/her clients. Our freedom to walk the streets without being confronted by offensive material has been lost to the freedom of the pornographer to publish.
NEITHER YOU, NOR ANYONE ELSE HAS THE FREEDOM TO NOT BE OFFENDED! Period!
Millions upon millions of people go to a newstand or magazine shop everyday withput so much as a thought or fleeting glance at the porn.
So much for the notion that society has brought freedom for all! In this game, some people have won; others have lost.
Freedom doesn't mean that everybody gets to have everything the way they want it. The fact that you expect that to be the case shows how little you understand the concept of freedom. Do I like the fact that all marrer of religious people come to my door early saturday mornings to try to convince me to convert to their religion? No, I don't, but I respect, and would gladly die for, their right to do so. freedom of speech and the press means that things one group of people might find offensive may still be published because those groups do not get to make descisions for everybody else.
