First of all, if "Love" was truly the reason for this holiday, then that "Love" would have first been directed towards our Creator; for if we truly "Love" our creator, then we will be compelled by our "Love" to obey Him. Additionally, when we make a holiday of "LUST" more important in our hearts than our "LOVE" for Yahweh, we have set a precedent for our children to follow, and pretty soon the whole barrel of apples (mankind) is rotten!

Papabear: At least some of them seem to think that that ought to be the case. Consider LaHaye's "The Glorious Appearing" from the Left Behind series. One of the Raptured tells one of the survivors of Har Megiddo that he'll "find that Jesus is all that matters now." This is in juxtaposition with the dispelling of romantic love in the Raptured and martyred, apparently to remove distraction from adoration of Jesus.
Never mind that romantic love was (presumably) DESIGNED by God/Jesus. The Canticle of Canticles isn't just about the Church, mind. Why would he expend so much effort on something just to efface it utterly? Shouldn't "perfect" entail "rational"?

Loving someone does NOT mean you are compelled to obey them. Yes, the marriage vows of old included the phrase 'love honour and obey', but that was only for the woman (typical misogynistic church propaganda). If the man loved the woman, shouldn't he have to obey her too? So they each have to obey the other? Sounds pretty chaotic to me.

Valentine's day is the commemoration (or was before it became so damned commercial) of the life of the Saint who performed illegal marriages for people who loved one another but would otherwise be barred from marrying. Both the couple and Valentine himself risked execution for this.
If that is not love and commitment, then please define the terms for me.
