Is this really where the country is heading? Let's just take from the hard working and give to the lazy? Atlas Shrugged should be required reading to students. In the book, all the productive people in society are punished, have to pay all the taxes to support all the dregs of society. One by one, they all disappear because they are fed up, when is that going to happen? I am all for ex-patriotism if people are able to do that. I am tired of standing in line behind access card users who are fully capable of working when I work so hard and struggle to pay my mortgage so the government can keep trying to get blood from a rock from me to pay them, it's sickening. Since when did incompetent people start dictating how society should be over hard working middle class? This country is upside down

We just came through a major economic failure caused by permitting the wealthy being permitted to do whatever they wanted. It was only solved by the government basically block-and-tackling the economy back into place.
I'm with Tempus: get lost.
1) The unemployed are rarely lazy. The overwhelming majority want to work, they just can't find a job. And let's be honest, you're really just lacking the balls to say "I want the unemployed to starve so I pay slightly less taxes".
2) "Atlas Shrugged" is a training manual for sociopaths and written by a psychopath. Anyone actually following it's "philosophy" (and that's a generous term for something that amounts to sheer selfishness) has less morals than Jeffrey Dahmer. Also, it's terribly written.
I am all for repatriation of the 32 trillion in offshore accounts. If we brought that back into the US economy, there'd be enough to put solar panels on everyone's roof and send a monthly packet of condoms to every home in America.
Fucking GOP, pretending that some poor slob using his food stamps to buy beer is the problem and not corporations sucking us dry.
" In the book, all the productive people in society are punished, have to pay all the taxes to support all the dregs of society."
The first three words give all the problems with your line of reasoning: in the book.
In reality, those that do pay a good part of their income as taxes are not rich: they are middle class.
The truly rich pay comparatively less (even when they do not cheat, which they do, extensively, because they have the means to cheat.).
However, I can understand that in some cases, some people might be more attracted by getting unemployment doles rather than having a job which in the end, gets them no social advantages (I am speaking about some countries in Europe.).
"when is that going to happen?"
when the revolution comes...
when jesus returns...
when ragnarok comes...
but, it just occurred to me, if it is really so bad, then why isn't it happening now?
"Let's just take from the hard working and give to the lazy?"
Not the lazy, but the needy. Sure there are some parasites living in all social welfare nets, but that doesn't mean you can't smoke them out. Just because you see somebody on welfare doesn't mean they are lazy. Jobs don't grow on trees! There aren't enough jobs for everybody right now, no matter how eager to work people are.
Because only the rich can be contributing members of society with TRAINS CHOOO CHOOO!
But in all seriousness, Atlas Shrugged is a dreadfully boring read that just keeps on hammering the same message into your skull over and over again in 50 page diatribes, its less of a novel and more of a rambling campaign speech. Its a book that would honestly make me want to switch class.
"Atlas Shrugged should be required reading to students."
If you would like more sociopaths in society, sure. Actually the majority of them will fall asleep due to her drab writing.
My copy is now propping up the shelf above my closet.

Miss a couple of payments, honey, and you'll become one of those dregs. How many paychecks away from the street are you? Do you think the Fox News crowd will toss you a nickel?
@Tempus
please go Galt already
You mean rape a woman and have it glorified by a shitty narrative?
Oh wait, that would be all of Ayn Rand's male leads. Because superior objectivist übermensches are rapists and only dregs and parasites would ever consider not being rapists.
Seriously I swear to God Ayn Rand was a pen name for Sunshine Mary.
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Atlas Shrugged'. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."
- John Rogers, writer, "Blue Beetle" vol. 3 and 4
"This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."
Dorothy Parker, on "Atlas Shrugged"
"'The Human Centipede' is the most effective adaptation of 'Atlas Shrugged' yet seen."
Citric, "The AV Club", on "The Human Centipede"
Translation: "FUCK THE POOR!!!"
@Ebon: I totally agree...I'm unemployed but I am practically pulling teeth to get a job. I am considering self-employment. Making things and selling them (starting with recycled candles)
Atlas Shrugged should be required reading to students.
Well, as long as it is only read to them, it’s OK. Most students could use the extra sleep.
Confused?
