(regarding the death of a teen on his birthday)
Europeans are more enlightened than are we American barbarians, who would want to throw the book at the perp. Three-and-a-half years in the clink is an adequate consequence for taking a (gay person's) life.

For the most part, I agree.

...except in this case.
Oh, the Brits are as disgusted by the ruling as we are. I guess the British people are Conan, then. The poor kid was torture-murdered on his birthday! Some birthday party! You're supposed to light the cake candles, not the person-of-honor! Where were his parents? What kind of birthday party was this? No one bothered to help him!
He could be posting sarcastically, i.e. mocking Europe's pro-equality values as not jiving with their unwillingness to punish hate crimes adequately. I mean, he's still an asshole, but I think people are misinterpreting.
No, it's not. Life without parole or the death penalty is an appropriate consequence. And since you think a gay's person's life is worth less than a straight person's, you are just as much of a monster as the sociopath who committed the crime.

I find it amazing a person calling him or herself a "Liberal Christian" is nothing but a vengeance driven bloodthirsty foaming-at-the-mouth "tough on crime" type.
Neither life without parole nor death penalty does anything worthwhile for the penal health. This is also clearly seen in such simple things as recidivism rates.
The Young Turks had 2 interesting segments on the phenomena:
Norway Prison System Luxurious?
Norway Vs U.S. Prison System
If you want a penal system that is actually working for the betterment of the country, you need to get rid of the antiquated outdated US penal ideas.
And this is why we call anti-gay people bigots. They may not all be saying it so honestly, but this is where it's coming from, and we know it, and no amount of "freedom of religion" smokescreen will make us not realize that this is where they're coming from.
Whoo. Damn. DeclinetoState did a really awful thing here.
If you're all for a justice system that's predicated on reformation and forgiveness, you're forced to agree with him to *some* extent.
But, the way it's worded here implies that crimes against gays should carry lesser sentences.
What an asshole.
Does both DeclinetoState and the judge find adequate 3,5 years for burning alive someone?
I would like to see the sentences they would give him for theft.
@Meeh
He burned an innocent person alive and did nothing to help. This was murder in one of the most brutal ways possible. If it was an accident or a prank, any person with a conscience would've tried to put out the fire. This sociopath did no such thing.
So call me bloodthirsty all you want. Someone who does something so sadistic cannot be rehabilitated and does not deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of society.
I'm all for rehabilitation when it's a viable option and I agree that the US needs to get rid of the overemphasis on punishment. This case is one where punishment is deserved.
Didn't I just make a long, angry comment about a quote concerning this a few days ago? Are there seriously more people who idolize that murderous bigoted monster? Well, here we go again...
The person who committed this heinous crime deserves far more than three and a half years in the slammer. If anything, he deserves the actual charge for murder, which I believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is around 25 years to life. The culprit horrifically, torturously killed an innocent young man on his birthday , then wrote anti-gay slurs on his corpse, for crying out loud! Him getting only three and a half years is an insult to society!
And the people who actually PRAISE the killer just make me absolutely sick. He is a monster, not a hero! If people are supporting his actions, they're breeding more hate, and proving that crimes like this will continue as long as their bigotry exists. It's a disgusting, cruel cycle, and I cannot stand how people could cheer someone for doing something that is downright evil .
That should do it. Let us hope that we never have to hear anyone cheering this sadistic murderer ever again.
@Liberal Christian
@Homeschool Hero
no you guys he was clearly just misunderstood
he thought gay people were fire elementals and would have their hit points restored if they were hit with a fire attack
or possibly he knew it was the gay teenager's birthday and was just trying to help him light the candles on his cake when somehow a terrible accident happened!
and then he wrote anti-gay slurs on the corpse because he remembered he was doing remedial english classes, and he had a test coming up on naughty words and he had to practice and he didn't have time to find his notebook!
even 3 years is just a barbaric punishment you vengeance driven bloodthirsty foaming-at-the-mouth "tough on crime" types! the so called "murderer" is the real victim here you monsters!!!!! >:(
i want to live in somalia where there basically are no laws or government and i can burn all the gay children i want
Confused?
