I should probably point out the context of this discussion is about judgment or punishment of God, as Jesus prophecied.

Peter is arguing the Petrism view; an allegorical interpretation of these prophecies relating them to the Roman Empire and the destruction of the Roman Empire. Which makes the most sense in the context of when Revelations was written as theological historians would point out.

It is not popular with the fundie, literalist, or conspiracy nut crowd as that would imply no second coming, rapture, tribulation, coming of the antichrist, battle of Armageddon as some of those propheicies would have come true in AD70 - with the destruction of Jerusalm and the eventualt destruction of the Roman Empire.

And probably the biggest kick in the teeth, that the Anichrist was Emperor Nero and not (Insert President or Pope here).
