FAIRFAX, Va. - Two of the most prominent and largest Episcopal parishes in Virginia voted overwhelmingly Sunday to leave The Episcopal Church and join fellow Anglican conservatives forming a rival denomination in the United States.
Truro Church in Fairfax and The Falls Church in Falls Church plan to place themselves under the leadership of Anglican Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria, who has called the growing acceptance of gay relationships a “satanic attack” on the church.

++Akinola's church has also said that he supports the current anti-gay legislation in Nigeria , which will result in the banning of all gay societies, same-sex kissing in public being punishable with five years in jail, and so on. I wonder whether the Truro and Falls Church people really know what they're letting themselves in for.
Hadanelith -- Yeah, it's amazing what these good, loving Xians will split over. A few decades ago there was a denomonation which had a major schism over whether or not the chalice should have a handle on it.
oh boy! That makes Webster's pretty kinky...
Matthew 4:10
Then Jesus said to him, " Get behind me, Satan! For it is written,'You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.'"
Reminds me of the history of Cat's people in red dwarf. Lister smuggled a cat on board Red Dwarf before being put into stasis as punishment. He used to talk to the cat about his dream of opening up a fast food restaurant in Fiji. Well the cat was pregnant and the cat's evolved into a bipedal sapient society over millions of years worshipping Lister who'd take them to the promised land. Eventually they had a holy war on whether there was going to be blue or green caps for the serving people and practically wiped themselves out.
Lister was amazed when he heard it all - not to mention commented, "What the smeg, they were going to be red hats."
something like that anyway.
I love how Christianity is the 'one true religion', yet it shares the same god with Judeaism and Islam, and it itself is shattered into more fragments then I can shake a staff at. They aren't going to be happy until every individual has their own denomination.

No, the growing acceptance is based on the realisation that being gay is as natural as having blue eyes. Face it, people, the bible is wrong!

Lister: So what happened?
Holly: Holy wars. Most of died in the fighting.
Lister: Fighting? Over what?
Holly: Between those who believed the hats should be red and those who believed the hats should be blue. Daft, really, in'nt it?
Lister: You're telling me! They were supposed to be green...
Papabear: I don't know if this counts as a schism, technically, since it dealt with a congregation rather than a sect, but I have heard of a fundamentalist church that split over the issue of what kind of new carpet to get for the building. Unlike carpeting, at least the chalice had something to do with the worship service!

FWIW (and I speak as an Anglican, so I might be biased), I don't think the issue of whether gay people are treated the same as straight people is quite as trivial a matter as the colour of Lister's hats.
The more conservative elements in the Episcopal Church are being really problematic. TEC is making wonderful progress by ordaining women and non-closeted homosexuals, and realising that homosexual unions are just as valid as heterosexual ones. That's the problem. There's a branch of Christianity that is really trying to practice the idea of God's all-encompassing love, and there are those who see that and realise that they can't be judgemental pricks anymore. Those are the ones leaving, and I say good riddance.
I'm in SC, and our dioscese has indicated that they'd like aternate oversight, which is the step leading to what these churches have done.
It will be interesting - there are a dozen big ol' historic churches sitting on millions of dollars worth of peninsular Charleson property that in theory belong to the national church.
The lead picture in the Washington Post for this topic was of a woman, a man, and a minister all in a passionate embrace. I almost expected the caption to be, "Gay relationships are evil, but three-ways are of the Lord."
Confused?
