[On why the U.S. won in Vietnam]

According to what I learned in school, a communist group of criminals started to persecute Christians in Vietnam. As a result, the US intervened in the conflict to aid the embattled Christians. They were able to successfully extract the Christians with minimal casualties while killing over a million of the bigoted Vietnamese butchers. However, because the US had a very dovish foreign policy at the time, they withdraw upon the completion of the mission. What you say contradicts that.

Well, the president of Vietnam at the time the war started was Ngo Dinh Diem, a fervent Catholic who, besides eliminating various religious sects who were a threat to his power, was abandoned by the US when he became an embarrassment for them. The US did nothing to interfere when his government was about to be toppled and he was killed in a coup d'etat in 1963.
So actually, if any religious group was persecuted it was the Buddhists by the repressive Diem regime. Also, the war in Vietnam was a civil war, between the Communist North and the non-Communist South. The Americans helped the South Vietnamese because it was in their best interest to do so. What is this fundie saying? Is he really saying this?

"The USA won the vietnam war, but we withdraw from vietnam because of our dovish foreign policy"

Speaking as a german, I can tell you: Self-delusions like these are NO good idea. This fundies' argument reminds me very much of something that happened here after WW1.

We started the first World War out of sheer stupidity and delusions of grandeur. We lost this war utterly and completely. Both are historical facts.

After the armistrice, the ultra-right conservatives started to spread a very dangerous lie: That the glorious german army was undefeated and could have won the war easily. "But the treacherous dovish liberals stabbed them in the back".

Read a little bit how german history developed after WW1, and why Germany fell for even worse ultra-right madness. This self-delusionary lie ("we lost the war only because of the left-wing liberals") was one important factor in this very bad development.

Not recognizing one's limitations, closing ones eyes to reality, and insisting on "We are exceptional! We are the greatest!" can become very, very dangerous.

We Germans have been there, done that. Believe me: Maintaining a national self-delusion is NOT a good idea.
