For instance, atheists believe there’s no God. But they believe in a Higher Being, whatever it may be, it’s human nature. What do you atheists say when you’re sick and you want help from a Higher Being? Be it the universe, or a candle, or yourself, or your cousin, or what/whomever? Really. I would like to know because there’s a time in everyone’s life when bad things happen and you “pray” to somebody/something. If you’re a scientist do you pray to a beaker, a lab coat, a mathematical equation?

You honestly can't seem to grasp the meaning of "atheist", can you? For an atheist, asking for such help is pointless because they genuinely don't believe such a Higher Being exists.

This is splitting hairs, I know, but actually I lack belief in a god. I don't say there is no god. For all I know there is, but I see no evidence of such.

Others do, of course, explicitly state there is no god.

Define "Higher Being" in some meaningful way. I'm pretty sure I don't believe such a thing though.

I don't beg and plead to the universe or anything else. I deal with the fucking problem. In your example I'd see a doctor like any rational person would. I certainly wouldn't "pray" or "meditate" or however else you'd like to imagine it to anyone or any thing.

Faced with the possibility that I could be dying at this very moment (unexplained symptoms, no doctors know what's wrong, etc.), I must say I don't think I would live my life any differently if I knew I was dying. I would probably live it the way I always have and plan for my funeral.

My tombstone. There will be a secular funeral complete with music from Metallica and Massive Attack (Orion/Teardrop respectively) and I will freak people out with my final words.

Well, when I'm sick I say... "hey, I'm sick". I don't want or need help from an imaginary being.

If I were getting "help" from myself or my cousin... I don't think I would consider it "help" from a "higher being". Strike that... I'm certain that I wouldn't consider it as such.

Yeah... that time is past for me. I grew up. I reached the age of reason. I don't pray to imaginary beings anymore. But when I did... I found out that it was a futile practice.

I don't, and I'm an atheist. I'm not sure what kind of atheist would believe in a 'higher being', though. Isn't it the point of being an atheist that you don't believe in a 'higher being'?

Replace 'higher being' with 'docter'. We gen in our cars and go to the hospital. If we can't do that, we call 911.

We don't pray. It's a useless ritual, an empty gesture, a sign of a deluded mind, a failure to connect to reality, etc.
We work on what's important to us using our own abilities, and do not rely on fantasies and delusions.

AA's the guy's that are into that 'higher being' stuff. Then they go on and call it god anyway.

Basically they tell Atheists that there's no way you can quit alcohol if you don't believe in this higher being. Other than that, I've never heard of an atheist believing in a higher being.

A candle? really? Who the fuck prays to a candle? Some religions use candles in rituals, but nobody prays to them. A beaker? I used to work in a lab, if I saw anyone praying to a beaker, or their lab coat, I'd probably call for the guys in the white coats.

When I'm sick, I go to the doctor, and whine like a brat about being sick. If life is bad, I bitch and moan to nobody in particular.

Do you know what prayer is? Do you really understand what worship means? How can you call yourself a Christian when you don't understand those terms?

It's just not something that everyone needs, it's a falsehood that it would be. It seems like a reflex to appeal to "sky parents" to many, but that too can go away over time, when knowing that it's unlikely and learning to cope better with reality and the problems of life. Just like you learned to not call your mom anymore when your nose bleeds? And just like you no longer believe in monsters under your bed or in the wardrobes. Then there's the actual community that is more likely to help than imaginary beings.

My parents were atheists. When I was sick they took me to doctor and helped get me better
