Discussing Genesis 1:
It is suggested that the word ‘day’ is used figuratively and could mean millions of years; however, there is absolutely no justification for this in the context. ‘Day’ here could not mean anything but a 24-hour day. The phrase ‘the evening and the morning’ precludes any other explanation.......Note that the sun, which was not created until Day 4 is not needed for a day-night cycle. All it requires is that the light source, which God had supernaturally created, shines on one side of the earth.

It has always baffled me how they absolutely insist that "day" in that context is a literal 24-hour day, and yet when God says "In that day, you shall surely die", it's somehow metaphorical. You can either have a literal 6-day creation with your God being a liar or you can admit that "day" is a metaphor in that context.
"I know this goes against all evidence, logic, and common sense, but the Bible says it, therefore it's true."
Remind me again why people are stupid enough to buy into this nonsense?
Of course, what is the definition for "hour" here, or minute or whatever?. Moreover, what should God have done in Norway, which has more than 12 hours of night or day according to the season?
While this may never have occurred to you, if you are going to take the time to believe that any part of the bible is truth, then you must also believe that it can be interpreted any way that you want. Besides, who cares if it took hours, years, or however long to create?

That didn't sound familiar, so I turned to my trusty "Pull-It-Out-Of-Your-Ass" Version of the Bible, and sure enough, there it was: Gen. 1:3 "And God said, Let there be light: and he clapped his hands twice and there was light from a supernatural light source."

It's simple. They're taught from birth that it's completely and utterly true. And if you doubt it for even one second, you will feel the greatest pain and torture imaginable, and you will feel it forever.
Priests are professional terrorists. And the best part is, the people they terrorize pay him for the privilege of making them live in perpetual fear.
Oh boo hoo. Jack huwted my widdle feewings!
Okay. Looking at this quote, I can't help but wonder why it makes more sense to create billions of stars several thousand times bigger than the earth, and place them thousands of light-years away, then put the earth in rotation of a supernaturally created light AFTER it was formed. Can I be faulted if I find this infallible explanation, well, fallible?
And then, if I did have religious beliefs, this would invalidate them if I don't agree? Which is a shame because I really don't mind people who don't think that Genesis had to be absolutely true.
@papabear:Good point!
Gen. 1:3 (First Day) "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that [it was] good: and God divided the light from the darkness 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night ."
Then later:
Gen. 1:14 (Fourth Day) "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night (conveniently forgetting He'd already done that three days - or nights - ago)"
This one is almost up there with the winner of the "Fundie Almost Dicovers the Sun Award" winner from a while back.
If you thought college astronomy was hard, forget about Biblical astronomy-It's impossible!
So you see, basically, god could be the FSM, Adam would be Optimus Prime, Eve a pack of angry racoons, garden of Eden the national plumber hall of fame, and the snake could represent Chuck Norris eating his own shirt. OMAGAD THAT NEARLLY MAKE AS MUCH SENSE AS THE OTHER STORY !!1!!One!
“All it requires is that the light source, which God had supernaturally created, shines on one side of the earth.”
Except every biblical description of the Earth is a flat plate. The sun gets the night off, it doesn’t move to a different part of the Earth.
If you’re going to be biblically literal, that does mean the whole bible.
Confused?
