[Why is belief necessary? Why couldn't God just forgive?]
Have you ever loved a woman and she didn't return it, in fact was just not responding in kind with love? The harder you loved her, the harder she didn't love you? Thats why!

Yeah, but while she didn't return my affection for her, I didn't throw here in lake of fire for it, either.
Tell God that if he wants a date, he should try joining a MySpace group; it may not help, but at least it might keep him distracted from banishing people to eternal fire for turning him down!

Biker, I think the clue to why women leave you lies in your own statement - the word "harder", to be exact.
Maybe if you tried to be less "hard" in your lovin', there will be no need for a god?
I sure as hell wouldn't do anything negative toward a woman that didn't return my love. Let me put it this way: If I truly loved her, it wouldn't matter if she returned the feeling, I'd still do a lot for her. Are you saying I'm a more pleasant person than God?

There was an article in the newspaper about stalkers once. A woman confronted her stalker and said "you can't make me love you" to which the stalker replied "no, but I can make your life pretty miserable if you don't"
I think THAT is what Biker was trying to say.
Yeah, so? Only a complete ass would torment someone to get a false love from someone. Of course, that is the way the Judeo/Christian/Islamic god comes off according to their holy books.
@Amos
All that said, the post that started that discussion is something I could have written. John 3:16 has always confused me.
Thank you. I am still waiting for the faithful to make sense out of it all.
I don't get it, Is god the woman or the loving guy?
If god's the woman, loving him would make him not love us.
If god is the loving guy, we would stop loving him, and he would love us harder.
Warning! Fatal analogy error! Please disembark all passengers from the analogy at this time!
A fatal analogy error has occurred. Your analogy will be terminated. Cease pressing keys and continue any cerebral functions if possible.
Error details:
Your analogy concerned love between two people. Love is a form of attraction which must be mutual for a relationship to work. The subject at hand involved forgiveness. Forgiveness is a willingness to put aside past transgressions and move on. Forgiveness requires only the willingness of the victim of the transgression and can be given even if the transgressor never knew of the existence of the victim, let alone the transgression.
but god ain't a lover, god's a parent. A parent should never remove love from a child no matter what. A parent may hate what the child has become, or done, but to stop loving is a rejection no parent should make. A parent should try and recover the child
Yeah but when she didn't love me back I didn't lock her up in my basement and torture her (or let my nemesis torture her, for that matter).
Hey look I'm better than God, bow down to me for my morality is better than Jehovah's.
That analogy only works if you never see the woman in person, only send letters to her demanding she do stuff for you or you'll kill her, make unrealistic brags in those letters and have someone else's name on the back of the envelope.
Confused?
