My Husband and I took our 13 and 16 yr. old boys to see [Titanic] as a family outing before Christmas. We were shocked and disapointed that there was frontal nudity and blatant sex in this movie. Not to mention the porno drawings, foul language and the glorification of immorality that was throughout this movie. I am so sorry that we didn't walk out of this movie. I apologized to my boys that I took them to this movie and I certainly asked God for forgiveness for taking my boys to see pornography wrapped in such a pretty package. My question would be what part of pornography and immorality would Jesus say is tolerable for anyone at ANYage to see? How can we as Christians comfortably see this movie, ignore the sin and recommend it for others to see because of the lovely story and the great special effects? I am concerned that our standard of purity is so low. How can we call ourselves God's Children, when we live like the world and have no conscience toward sin if it is wrapped up so pretty. What would Jesus do or say?

EDIT: You know, part of what cracks me up the most is that far filthier things were written back in more "noble and Christian" times. I'm looking specifically at you, "The Miller's Tale" from Canterbury Tales...

The important word in this paragraph is "purity". Psychologist Jonathan Haidt describes there being five basic foundations in human moral thought: care, fairness, loyalty, respect and purity. By this he means that all moral convictions that humans innately feel are connected to one of these forms of propriety.

However, these individual moral foundations can become an obsession to some people, while others can become almost irrelevant to others. For example, the "fairness" foundation can become an obsession to certain liberals, who are usually behind the more wacky and ridiculous fairness initiatives that make even other liberals feel tempted to use the phrase "political correctness gone mad". However, liberals also place a high value on "care", far more so than conservatives; hence all this health care nonsense.

In this case, this mother is so obsessed with "purity" (and probably more importantly, obsessed with openly demonstrating the degree of her purity to others) that she cannot tolerate coming into contact with anything that might "contaminate" her and her family. This could be sex, other cultures, anything not explicitly Christian, etc. Since she obviously surrounds herself with a group of people who will automatically enable her obsession with purity, the notion that she is correct to feel contaminated by such things is elevated to an axiomatic fact.

By allowing herself to be taken in by this moral illusion, she transmits it to her children and genuinely jeopardises their ability to navigate their way through life without feeling disgusted by everything they encounter that doesn't fall into an extremely narrow band of acceptability. And thus a new generation of bigots is borne!

Yeah, it's pretty interesting stuff actually. What's more interesting is that Haidt found that, across the board, liberals valued fairness and care higher than conservatives, while conservatives valued loyalty, respect and purity higher than liberals.

Conservatives value fairness as the lowest value, while liberals value purity lowest. No wonder conservatives think liberals are depraved, since they obsess about purity in a way that liberals don't and thus we are comfortable engaging in behaviours (and, more importantly, being open and honest about doing so) that they treat with shame and disgust.

However, it doesn't hurt people to be aware and open about sex these days, thanks to better scientific understanding of sexuality and biology, while it quite obviously DOES cause harm to people to value care and fariness lowest.

Ho hum!

I bet your boys were happy you took them to this movie.

I would be more concerned about the loveless, monetary-only marriage she was about to enter into. Didn't Jesus say something about giving away all your earthly possessions and follow him?

God created us in the nude. That must mean he is nude also. What, then can be wrong with showing God's creation in all its glory?

And, hey, I can't remember seeing Leonardo DiCaprio's "equipment".

This woman would probably die if she saw the Swedish movies "One Summer of Happiness" and "I am Curious" (both the Yellow and the Blue), even though they are 40 and 60 years old. Our society is still up and running, and we might well have lower divorce and abortion rates than the US.
