@ Xenuwashere, anyone playing Devil's Advocate.
The problem isn't young children working per se, it's that literally every single job where a child is employed has been historically exploitational simply because children respond better to threats and other forms of coercion, have no real concept of rights or human dignity, and have no way to defend themselves on any level against an adult. We're talking far past reprehensible, here, even by the standards of the day. Children always got it far worse.
Not just hard labor either. Child actors? Name five in recent memory that haven't been fucked up by the demands placed on them, even considering the limitations placed on their working conditions. The Jackson 5 goes without saying, Macaulay Culkin's home life went to shit and drugs followed, Heather O'Rourke worked herself to death, anyone on Toddlers and Tiaras has a head start on a mental breakdown. In short, put a child at the mercy of any industry and they will be pushed to the brink and over for a quick buck.
There are places in the world where a child will starve if they don't work true enough, but the work is typically life-threatening and the pay will always leave them starving anyway. More troubling is that the places that will "hire" children (buy them, in practice) won't employ their parents under any circumstances. Why? Because even an adult that mentally reduces their self-worth to that of an animal will fight back at some point. A big animal with nothing to lose is much more dangerous than a small one.
Some might call it foolish to damn a practice based on what could be, but one is also foolish to ignore historical precedent and a 100% rate of pants-shitting abuse when viewing child labour in history.
