At what point is killing/hurting something wrong?So let me rephrase the decision, what is okay to kill or hurt in situations where equally valuable lives are not at stake? Or in other words, at what point does life hold value or is life sacred?

This is going to be difficult for me to articulate. O_O. Not the best with them word thingies.

I believe that a majority of any group decides what is right or wrong when killing. As an example: If the majority of the people in the group you belong to decide that killing all people with mental illness is okay, then it is okay.

The majority decides when killing is right or wrong.

A shitty truth is still truth, though this is a very simplistic & flawed way of conveying this particular one as it fails to deal with complicating factors such as empathy, environmental & social pressures, legal systems, misinformation and consequence-based reasoning in favor of a simple if/then statement. While we might all have our own personal moral compasses, they're ultimately calibrated to varying extents by our social environments and individual experiences & perspectives. Were that not the case, this site wouldn't exist. Culture wouldn't exist. Think for a moment of how many of the once acceptable practices of the past we broadly deem wrong & vice versa today, then consider how many of our own broadly-shared moral judgements will likewise be considered wrong by future generations. If the future belongs to the vegans, for instance, then think how they'll look back on us with our veal and bacon and Burger Kings. In our time it's acceptable while in their time it's horrifying.

That doesn't mean that we shouldn't seek moral refinement--quite the opposite, actually, as that renders morality a craft to be studied and improved upon--or that we shouldn't advocate for what we believe is right and speak out against what we believe is wrong. It does, however, mean that we shouldn't fall into the trap of thinking that we're the ones who finally figured out morality or that there's some intangible quality to our moral systems that will carve them into the fabric of reality as law for the rest of time. That's fundie thinking. Pieces of our fresh moral positions will be picked up, dusted off and carried forward with other such gems from our forebears while the rest will tossed aside as misguided, useless or even repulsive. Just like we do.
