Nor should they be. Imagine if your wife was taken to the hospital and admitted. You go to see her and they won’t let you in because it’s a Catholic hospital, and your ‘marriage’ was in a protestant church, so you don’t meet their definition of ‘married spouse.’
Civil Unions aren’t in any policy. not for filing taxes, visitation, conjugal visits, loan cosigners, car rentals, school dependent pick-up… But if they’re married, they just walk in to those benefits without 2 million civil lawsuits to prove that unions count as marriage in each instance.

This isn’t a redefinition of marriage. it remains, legally, a partnership. If they redefined it, then EVERYONE would have to sue to have the rights at hospitals, schools, Hertz, jails…

Nope. They just point out that in a secular society, there’s no secular basis for this discrimination.
