"We are a small, rural district in the Bible Belt with strong Christian beliefs and feel like homosexuality is wrong," said Steve Griffin, Holmes County's school superintendent, who keeps a Bible on his desk and framed Scriptures on his office walls.
a federal judge reprimanded Davis for conducting a "witch hunt" against gays. Davis was demoted, and school employees must now go through sensitivity training.
And despite all that, many in this conservative Panhandle community still wonder what, exactly, Davis did wrong.

What'd he do wrong? I could say "continue breathing," but ....
Just for the hell of it: Davie, it might have had something to do with trying to push those personal religious beliefs in your capacity as a public authority figure. I hope Osama bin Laden becomes your town's next mayor, just so you'll learn how that works.
Yeah, this one actually made me light headed when I read it. I couldn't figure out if it was because there are that many ignorant people, it just really pissed me off, or both.
EDIT: There's a really good quote on the second page too: "Ardena Gillman also knew some of the students would need to learn to be tolerant.
"What happens when these kids get out in the real world after they leave Ponce de Leon and they have a black, homosexual supervisor at their job?" she said."
The principal was probably a bully in his school days and continues his behavior now that he has some authority.
I feel a principal of a school has the responsibility to make sure the kids have a good education is a safe environment. If he is that hurtful to kids that are gay, I can't imagine how he treats adults that he knows are gay.
I think maybe he should have been let go of his position at the school, he shouldn't be allowed to teach.
Shame on the town for supporting him.
It took me three tries to even type something coherent, this pissed me off so much.
He's lucky there wasn't violence against the gay students, or the outed girl. He can't be sued into abject poverty enough for my tastes.
Even Jesus would call him a dickhead.

This isn't the first time such people have needed things explained to them twice. Slowly. Very slowly. With small words.
Most of them still don't understand why the Dover trial turned out the way it did.

Well, last time I checked, suspending someone becasue they were gay, was wrong.
There's plenty of room up here in Canada. Give us your gays! Your blacks! Your Jews! Your immigrants! Pile 'em on, people, no need to be stingy.
Also, Davis can kiss my pasty white ass.
Please let me assure everyone here that not all Florida Crackers think like this.
(Spent early childhood in the Panhandle, have family there, proud Florida Cracker STILL.)
That principal was a bastard.
And a pervert.
"He went so far as to lift the shirts of female students to insure the letters 'GP' or the words 'Gay Pride' were not written on their bodies."
I noted that the tension is between the High Schoolers who are tolerant and the "Elders" who aren't, that means in 20 years gay bashing won't be a problem in that city. Because all the bigots will be dead.
"'He went so far as to lift the shirts of female students to insure the letters 'GP' or the words 'Gay Pride' were not written on their bodies.'"
Wait, wait, WAIT A FUCKING MINUTE. So, these parents are ok with him outing gay students by doing what could be construed as sexual harassment? I think this community's morals are just a wee bit backwards...
Let's see:
Davis works at a public school
Davis is promoting his version of Christianity
Davis is preaching his version of Christianity in this public school.
If it had been an Iman or a rabbi, the demotion would have been demanded by you, and don't deny it.
And then there was the looking under girl's skirts. If one of those girls has been my daughter, I would have taken a baseball bat to him.
"I fucking hate the south."
Ditto.

How stupid are these hicks exactly?

1. He let his personal religious beliefs interfere with his job, thereby disobeying this country's mandate of separation of church and state.
2. He discriminated against his students.
3. He abused his power.
4. He is an ignorant, bigoted moron.
Confused?
