[RE: the Christian marine in trouble for proselytizing to Muslim Iraqi citizens... it starts so good...]
If he was on duty he should be held accountable for his actions. If he was off duty then he shouldn't be handing tracks out at such a vulnerable place making a distraction opening the check point to be more vulnerable. But if the spirit had prompted him to do this, then he must submit to Gods' will. Who knows which one of those muslims might convert and cause a domino effect as a result of those coins. He needs our prayer and support not condemnation, no matter what your understanding of the constitution says.
GOD first, everything and anything other than Him is just static.

What this Marine did was careless. My husband is a former Marine and one of the things they taught them in Infantry School is being respectful of other cultures and religious observations while being stationed abroad. This Marine could have jeopardized his platoon by doing this. The fact that the fundies over at RR feel that saving a few "Muslim souls" is worth jeopardizing our troops is appalling, but I'm not surprised by their response.
They should apply the traditional tests for witches to determine wether Satan made him do it, or the holy spirit.
Maybe the water test is a good idea.
He gets tied up and thrown into a river. Then it is checked wether he floats on the water (meaning that he is possessed by Satan) or sinks (meaning that there is no possession by Satan and he might have done it under influence of the holy spirit).
Of course in he latter case, there might be a certain chance that he might drown (as was often the case when this test was used in medieval times for witch trials), meaning that the declaration of innocence might come posthumous.
And if the Muslim decided that this was an attack on his religion and that the Americans should be punished for their insolence? Would that be God's will as well?
It's a powder keg over there, doing stupid shit like that will more than likely get somebody killed.

It would be easier to see if he weighs as much as a duck.

Even the old greeks knew better than yourself:
Panta rhei ("Everything flows")
is something Heraklit postulated as soon as 500 BC,
meaning that everything in this universe changes.
Sounds like you are backwards even compared to the knowldge of the time in which Jesus lived ;)
But if the spirit had prompted him to do this, then he must submit to Gods' will.
I don't think his superior officers will see it quite that way.
...cause a domino effect as a result of those coins.
Is that the effect where the locals keep repeating "These a**hole Americans really are on another Crusade.!" That'll definitely make us more popular.
"But if the spirit had prompted him to do this, then he must submit to Gods' will"
It's hard not to feel uneasy when I think of people thinking like this, who have guns. How do they know the difference between "Gods' will" and "their current whims"? Because of how they "feel" about it?
The spirit didn't prompt him to do it. His typical fundie holier-than-thou, "my religion's better than yours" attitude did. I don't know which one of those Muslims might convert - probably none in a land where people are willing to be suicide bombers for their faith - but we know most of them will be offended and cause a domino effect of blowing up a bunch of Marines as a result of those coins. The American people didn't elect some Marine to interfere with our foreign policy.
"Who knows which one of those muslims might convert and cause a domino effect as a result of those coins."
You mean like the domino effect of Democracy spreading across the middle east? Sorry neither, the domino effect was disproven with Vietnam.
"cause a domino effect as a result of those coins"
I can't read the rest of it, but that right there made me snicker for some reason.
The United States did not invade Iraq to start a new crusade. In fact, we are supposedly not invaders or occupiers.
Either way, the soldier's arrogance is pitiful and he needs to keep his faith to himself. He is a soldier representing the United States of America, not the christians of America.
How would you like to have a Muslim stand at the entrance to your city and hand out tracts to everyone? Or a Jew, or an atheist or a Buddhist?
As someone at fstdt pointed out, if John 3:16 was inscribed on the back that must have been some whompin' big coin. And if the message is in English it ain't going to be highly effective. Well thought out, Gyrene.
Soldiers, in a position of authority in the country that we have invaded, and who are representative of our nation, should not be trying to convert Muslim civilians. It is that easy. They are in the army of a secular nation that happens to be populated by Christians. If these soldiers go around trying to force Christianity on everyone they run across, they will breed more resentment in an area where we scarcely need it.
It really doesn't start off that good, even off duty he doesn't have the right to do that. That's like saying that the restriction on beer is only for duty hours in Muslim countries.
As a member of the military they can tell you what you are allowed to do or say even during your off duty hours.
"no matter what your understanding of the constitution says.
GOD first"
And non-Christians like me are the unpatriotic ones??? I suppose Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin were unpatriotic too!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
