I'm sick of people trying to keep politics and religion separate. The Nazis did a great job of that, by the way, and millions died.

[Note, "brood of vipers" appears in Matt. 3:7 & 12:34. John 2:15 depicts Jesus driving out the money changers (adders) from the temple. The word "adders" also appears in Psalms 140:3]

Millions of other people who were slaughtered by faithful christians during the middle ages, because they were seen as heretics or witches or possessed will be able to tell you how "beneficial" a state where church and state are united can be.
Ask the Cathars for example...peaceful believers in a kind of gnostic shootofffrom christianity, how peaceful they were treated, when the catholics slaughtered them in the 13th century.

For more recent examples of how beneficial it is if state and religion work together, just look at the islamist countries in the middle east.
Iran for example, or Saudi arabia.
In Saudi Arabia for example a fire broke out in a girls school. When the girls tried to flee the burning building they were however driven back into the flames by the religious police, because they weren´t properly attired forleaving the building (because the girls weren´t wearing their shador). A lot of these girls died.

I just like to think of them as politics for reality and religion for fantasy. Politics for life and living and religion for death and dying. Politics for responsibility and work and religion for conning and parasitically preying. Politics to maintain civility and organize society for the benefit of all and religion to create divides and foster isolationism. Politics to ensure equality of race, gender and sexuality and religion to encourage tribalism, inequality and repress sexuality. Politics to facilitate a society wherein all can prosper and express themselves to the limit of their abilities and religion to stifle, render inadequate, provide a crutch for the lazy and provide justification for mans' lowliest and most despicable qualities.

So yeah! They serve entirely separate purposes, but sometimes politics becomes infested with religion and then it loses its usefulness, withers and dies, sacrificed on the altar of totalitarian theocracy.
