The same liberals who complained it was utterly unscientific for Sen. Bill Frist to diagnose Terri Schiavo's medical condition from the Senate floor think it's scientific to guess about the "unconscious" things that conservatives have hidden from themselves inside their own brains. What if you're a religious parent who feels that the homosexual lifestyle is sinful, at odds with what God intended for humanity? These academics don't like to discuss religion, except by implying that religious parents are "controlling" and "authoritarian" and prompt "hateful" attitudes. Secular leftists hate it when conservatives bring religion into politics, arguing it's unfair to say God favors the Republican agenda. But then they turn around and bring science into politics, insisting that science favors the liberal agenda, that "reality has a liberal bias."

I don't know what study he is talking about, but they don't typically measure "unconscious" things. They asked men if they self-identified as "homophobic." They then showed participants gay porn, and measured increases in penis size as measurement of arousal. As it turns out, self-identified homophobes were significantly more likely to be aroused.

That's because the last time we checked, Bill Frist wasn't a medical doctor so his opinion was worthless. While the recent study on homophobia and latent repressed same-sex desires is the latest in a long list of studies that reach the same conclusion.

That's because the last time we checked, Bill Frist wasn't a medical doctor so his opinion was worthless.
Actually, Frist is a doctor, a cardiac surgeon. What made his "diagnosis" worthless was that he never actually examined Schiavo, reaching his opinion based on an edited videotape.

The problem with this rant of impotent rage is that the US Constitution specifically prohibits religion being put into our politics, yet says absolutely nothing about prohibiting science mixing with politics, thereby allowing it.

Brent is talking about a more recent study that DID measure unconscious stuff. Here's an excerpt from an article:
Our paper describes six studies conducted in the United States and Germany involving 784 university students. Participants rated their sexual orientation on a 10-point scale, ranging from gay to straight. Then they took a computer-administered test designed to measure their implicit sexual orientation. In the test, the participants were shown images and words indicative of hetero- and homosexuality (pictures of same-sex and straight couples, words like “homosexual” and “gay”) and were asked to sort them into the appropriate category, gay or straight, as quickly as possible. The computer measured their reaction times.
The twist was that before each word and image appeared, the word “me” or “other” was flashed on the screen for 35 milliseconds long enough for participants to subliminally process the word but short enough that they could not consciously see it. The theory here, known as semantic association, is that when “me” precedes words or images that reflect your sexual orientation (for example, heterosexual images for a straight person), you will sort these images into the correct category faster than when “me” precedes words or images that are incongruent with your sexual orientation (for example, homosexual images for a straight person). This technique, adapted from similar tests used to assess attitudes like subconscious racial bias, reliably distinguishes between self-identified straight individuals and those who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual.

Using this methodology we identified a subgroup of participants who, despite self-identifying as highly straight, indicated some level of same-sex attraction (that is, they associated “me” with gay-related words and pictures faster than they associated “me” with straight-related words and pictures). Over 20 percent of self-described highly straight individuals showed this discrepancy.
Notably, these “discrepant” individuals were also significantly more likely than other participants to favor anti-gay policies; to be willing to assign significantly harsher punishments to perpetrators of petty crimes if they were presumed to be homosexual; and to express greater implicit hostility toward gay subjects (also measured with the help of subliminal priming). Thus our research suggests that some who oppose homosexuality do tacitly harbor same-sex attraction.
What leads to this repression? We found that participants who reported having supportive and accepting parents were more in touch with their implicit sexual orientation and less susceptible to homophobia. Individuals whose sexual identity was at odds with their implicit sexual attraction were much more frequently raised by parents perceived to be controlling, less accepting and more prejudiced against homosexuals.

First, Bill Frist, as a doctor, should have known better than to diagnose Terri Schiavo from the Senate floor because good medicine is actually looking at all of the evidence and not just a sixty-second video. Personally, I thought that move was little more than political grandstanding.
Second, don't dismiss any scientific study out-of-hand until you've read it. If you see a study related to something you might not like, check out the hypothesis, how they controlled for it, and the conclusions of the study. Judge it based upon the sample size, how it could be falsifiable, and factor out the authors' biases. If you can do that and still take issue with the study, then by all means say and do so. There is more than one study on the relationship between homophobia and repressed same-sex desires, some of which are more reliable than others...
(And, frankly, this also holds true when judging supreme court decisions you might not otherwise agree with...)

Okay, I just took the Advanced Placement Psychology exam, so I'm qualified to say little more than "hmmm..." and read the DSM-IV.
But I'm also a writer, and I can tell you this: the lady doth protest too much. Phrase from Shakespeare, who had his finger on the pulse of human nature, and human nature isn't likely to change. You can read humanity from our literature and our dramatic visual media, and this is it: often, one hates worst the things that embody the qualities about ourselves that we despise. So yeah, extreme irrational homophobe equalling repressed homosexual makes plenty of goddamn sense, storywise and characterwise.
Funny how you only ever see God's plan in things YOU like, but when it's something you don't like, like the fact that gay people are born that way, you refuse to acknowledge it as part of His plan.
Kind of like when you say God favors the Republican agenda, when that agenda goes against everything that Jesus taught.

I'm curious which study they're talking about. I know that there was one study that showed homophobes becoming aroused at the sight of gay porn a few years ago, but that's not "recent" in this case. Also, there were some questions about that study - for instance, it's known that anger can cause the same type of arousal in people, so it didn't prove that homophobes are gay.
Secondly, it is true that how you are raised does affect your adult beliefs. The things you are taught as a child do carry over as an adult-especially if you're sheltered from opposing viewpoints. If your parents drill into you at a young age that homosexuality is wrong, you're still going to believe it as an adult, unless you've been exposed to homosexuals enough to learn the opposite.
