It's June 1st and the blog's getting a bit of a make over.

It is now publicly accessible, has it's own image and has a new name, Distind Says the Darndest Things. The image is a laughing Father Jack that happened to strike my fancy. If you're reading this and don't know who that is, find a way to watch the linked show. We'll see how the blog being public goes, but so long as the signal to noise ratio stays reasonable it'll stay that way.

If you've been following along already you'll know I owe everyone a mock up of a new public admin interface, but right now I owe myself some freaking sleep that illness has ensured I didn't get. There's an outline together but a visual representation will be better for showing the points I want feedback on.

@ PlayOnWords: Agree that racists say should be renamed bigots say. As for the more modern look, I could help with that, bossman willing. I could use CSS alone to modernize the look quite a bit without really touching the HTML. Might need a few things encased in divs and assigned classes, but that'd be it. A cursory look at the HTML tells me not much of that would be necessary. When I get back from the doctor this morning (just a checkup and getting meds refilled), I may play around with it a bit using static copies of the HTML. I can do a mockup and see what you guys and bossman think.

Based on what I know, nested comments would be a bitch to implement. A rewrite of the code that displays comments would be necessary, along with some mucking around with the database: a field would have to be added to the comments table to hold the IDs of each comment's parent. On the other hand, @user backlinks probably wouldn't be too hard, though--a little legwork, but no major changes to the underlying code that handles the comments or database changes. But that's me talking. Distind's way more qualified to answer that: I don't know what the backend code is like, and I have experience doing server-side coding in PHP, not ASP(.NET).

I'll take a look at some of this, but threaded comments are just more trouble than they're worth. A quoting mechanism(that actually works) is on my todo list, but a hell of a ways down. Shouldn't be terribly hard once I have the rest together.

Submissions page is another that's getting a full rebuild along with public admin, I'm open to suggestions on improvements at pretty much any point till I implement the thing.

I'd appreciate any mock ups you care to generate. The new design is definitely moving towards divs and away from the "Written in 36 hours of panic" approach it currently uses. Beyond that I'm not certain yet.

@Distind: I'd be fine with Bigots Say the Darndest Things if it is clearly confined to prejudice based on immutable characteristics. There are already too many anti-Muslim (but not obviously racist) posts cluttering up RSTDT as it is.

And as regards splitting SSTDT off, is the current situation of having to curate their quotes as part of FSTDT (or BSTDT, if that's rolled together) better? If we ever get enough Public Admin folks for PA to work the way it's apparently intended to, splitting off SSTDT would mean that you would never have to read their quotes again unless it was to fix an important Issue - and that could probably be delegated.

Also, tangent: "Turd burgler" is primarily a pejorative term for a male homosexual, so it's a rather odd choice of slur in this context, in addition to being offensive.

Yeah, you're the prick who claims I was lying when I said it was decided over my marriage. Well, it wasn't a lie. What you're bitching about was only one in a never fucking ending stream of stupidity and drama I had somehow allowed myself to be sucked into years ago. I attended three weddings last year. Two while adminning that hole, during both of those weddings some stupid fucking thing came up and by the time I got home there was gnashing of teeth and wailing over how I hadn't saved the fucking world from the idiots who set themselves on fire. I refused to let that happen on my own wedding day. That really was the last straw. And know what, I'm coming up on an anniversary of being the happiest I've ever been. So feel free to go fuck yourself all the way back to those forums. Haven't missed them, won't miss you.

All that said, for the viewers at home I'm sure there are plenty of people over there who aren't jackasses(I've heard the queen bee who was at the center of my last argument burnt out and ran away after I dropped the place), the former forums being mentioned now run as FQA linked from the front page. Last I knew they were drifting a tad no longer have a direct association with the main page and could probably use some new blood.
