[Re: the movie 300 ]
I lived in Europe in the 80’s and was aghast at what the public felt was OK in films produced there. We have now descended to that low of a level where relativism reigns in the place of God in our hearts. I ask myself the question, 'would Jesus go see this movie?' and the answer is an emphatic no. Barb has said it beautifully, read her review. Do you go to a restaurant trash can to pick out the “good” stuff left in it and discount what else you have to wade through and then give a high rating to the contents of the can? Will you allow your children or worse, do you teach them to judge what they participate in based on whether other children or the culture are doing worse? Based on that relativism, it is OK to be hooked on cough medicine because others are addicted to heroin. I only reason I did not leave the theater at the first sex scene is to be able to review it. At points I did close my eyes and start conjugating verbs in Japanese it was that offensive. I agree with Barb, the film would not have been harmed at all if the sex and extreme violence were left out. I doubt I will ever go see an R movie again.
My Ratings: Extremely Offensive / 3

If only it was a fatal collective heart attack.
America would be MUCH nicer in a few moments, can't beat that.
You went to see an R-rated movie and got offended by the violence and sex? Sigh...
And what's with the random Europe-bashing in the beginning? Yes, we have somewhat different standards then you Americans (I'm assuming you're American anyway), but you can't expect us to change just because you're offended...
This person obviously missed the 70s and 80s, probably due to coke addiction. American action, and horror movies have become quiet toned down since then. Ok, so this past decade wasn't quiet as bland as the 90s were, but it's still nothing like the glory days of the 70s and 80s.
You went to see a movie about a famous battle, and were annoyed by the violence.
That's like going camping and being annoyed by all the trees.
You're a fucking moron.
300 was a shitty movie, but not because Jebus wouldn't like it.
And I don't recall a bit of explicit sex in 300. Unless Bob-o is confessing that he gets off on sweaty guys ....
Holy. Shit. On. An. Alter.
It's a movie about one of the most fanatical, cohesive fighting forces that the world has ever seen. Spartans. Violent people.
That's like going to a Harry Potter film and complaining about all the magic (been done to death, i know). Much less sex and violence. At least this turd didn't talk about how demons raped his brain on the way home...
With any luck, Europe is what America will be like when it grows up.
If you went to 300 without realizing the movie contained extreme violence and sexual situations (heterosexual ones I might add, I could just imagine his reaction if they'd been realistic and had suggestions of gay male sex), you didn't do your homework. Any cursory search of the web would have turned up loads of information detailing the movie's plot and visual content.
Weren't the Spartans known for going into battle naked? Then why the heck did you get offended?
Yeah, we Europeans can manage to watch a tit or two, for several minutes, without going to pieces. After all, half of the population have them, more than that, in fact.
Never watch the Swedish move "The Girl who Played with Fire", m'kay. In it two women sit and talk with each other, after having sex, and they are both stark naked. We here in Europe, who know that all women have tits, we can handle that, but some Americans, who seem oblivious to the matter, might explode.
"At points I did close my eyes and start conjugating verbs in Japanese it was that offensive. "
Don't you find that causes spontaneous, inappropriate erections when conversing with Japanese business men?
Oh, and your punctuation leaves a bit to be desired.
Bla bla Europe bla bla restaurant trash bla bla relativism bla bla cough medicine bla bla conjugating verbs in Japanese bla bla Extremely Offensive.
I believe I missed the point of this review at some point. Please try again, this time focusing on acting, visuals, music, narrative themes, characterisation, and plot tension and cohesion? You know, like in a proper film review and all that?
"At points I did close my eyes and start conjugating verbs in Japanese it was that offensive."......"I may never see an R movie again".
Wow. You're 58 years old? This has to be the most extreme case of sexual repression I've ever seen, If you have a wife, I pity her.
What did you think this movie was about, anyway? How could they possibly remove the violence from a film about WAR?
@BlackMageJ:
You win an internet.
"Do you go to a restaurant trash can to pick out the “good” stuff left in it and discount what else you have to wade through and then give a high rating to the contents of the can?"
Next time you eat out, you should try getting a table.
"Based on that relativism, it is OK to be hooked on cough medicine because others are addicted to heroin."
Why should what anyone else does matter in your own life?
"I only reason I did not leave the theater at the first sex scene is to be able to review it."
Yeeeeaaaah, suuuuuure.
"At points I did close my eyes and start conjugating verbs in Japanese it was that offensive."
Anyone who finds booby shots offensive seriously needs to get laid.
Swede

Not to mention the Norwegian movie based upon the novel "Ice Castle", it was shown on Norwegian TV's years ago and it contains full frontal nudity and lesbian activities between two 14 year old girls.
Nithing
I imagine the actual Jesus would be terrified and confused by ANY movie, and would either flee from the cinema or attack the screen.
I don't know why that made me laugh so hard, but it did.
Why do these fundies insist on going to R-rated movies and then whine about how offended they were? They're rated R for a reason.
Funny though, I bet ol' Bob here wouldn't have any problem with all the violence in The Passion of the Christ and would happily take children to see it.
Showing off that we can speak Japanese?
In Europe it's usual to speak at least three languages. I need to because of where I am located. No big deal. Besides, we don't use our languages to pretend we don't enjoy sex.
"I agree with Barb, the film would not have been harmed at all if the sex and extreme violence were left out."
The sex and violence found in the movie 300 is rather tame compared to the sex and violence within the pages of the Christian Bible.
In the sex free, non-violent Christian version of 300, men and women pray instead of rooting and the Spartans and Persians hit each other with pillows and have a good laugh about it before asking the audience "Would you like to know Jesus?"
Lucilius: um, it has been awhile, but I do remember a rather lengthy sex scene between Leonidas and his wife at the beginning. It was a bit unnecessary but meh. There's also a few, very quick scenes of lesbian lovin' (in a purely masculinized way - just kissing and groping) during the scene showing Xerxes' court of debauchery or whatever.
The irony is I bet he's more disturbed by completely natural reproductive act between a married couple than by all the killing going on...
So, let me get this straight:
You went to see a movie about one of the most famously bloody battles in history, fought by the infamously fanatical and war-like Spartans and containing scenes set in Greece, the most famously debauched place in the ancient world.
And you are surprised that a lot of violence and some nudity was featured?
How exactly did you expect them to portray a battle? If the violence was taken out, what would have been left?
This is blasphemy...
This is madness!
@Mike Sihl
Not exactly. In the Christian version of 300, there's no sex, but God tells the righteous Spartans to defeat the evil Muslim Persians. So with God's help and after praying for a while, they kill all God's enemies so not one of them is left, then take all the Persians' women for their own. Then they ask the audience if they want to get to know Jesus.
That's a bit more old testament.

Madness?
THIS
IS
FUNDIE!!!
*Kick*

The bible has a lot of sex and extreme violence.
Seriously, do you people ever read that book you beat other people over the head with.
"At points I did close my eyes and start conjugating verbs in Japanese it was that offensive."
I call bullshit! It may have worked with Latine (or French, or German), but anyone who actually speaks Japanese will tell you that it has very little in the way of conjugaison.
Guys, stop taking the piss. At least he can count to three.
1, 2, Offensive, Extremely Offensive, 3. You should all know this.
There are no numbers after that, only the word God.
But seriously, what a dickhole.
Confused?
