I suspect that the Christians who defend King James are the same ones defending Donald Trump. People like Southern Baptists could easily say "Trump isn't any holier than anyone else, but we're going along with him anyway because he's advancing our cause." Instead they claim he has some kind of 'annointing'.
Likewise, King James was a bad monarch. Being a closet case was the least of his crimes. He also burned people for being witches, maintained that he had a right to be treated as a god (which even an avowed non-Christian can recognise as blasphemy) and his incompetence led to the death of his son and the rule of Oliver Cromwell, and subsequent death of millions. While a widely available translation of the Bible was necessary at that point in history, James didn't commission or translate it himself - he sponsored a project which was already underway in return for having his name stuck on it. A bit like Trump and his buildings, really.
Nope, it was said while he was king, or "Queen".

So, all hail Queen David and Queen James.
