This past Saturday morning I found myself in a five-car caravan cutting across the Kansas plains with about 30 religious protesters. In the back of a truck, there were signs that read "Thank God for IED's" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers."

Julian, Phelps believes that God is punishing America because of gays and other various things. He says that soldiers are dying because America supports homosexual rights. I'm not quite sure what planet he's living on, but I'm not willing to find out.
Phelps is the "mastermind" behind http://godhatesfags.com It should be noted that his church is comprised of mainly his own family members and a few others. It's small, but he gets publicity because he's so outrageous and lately he's been picketing the funerals of fallen US Soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. He and his protestors shout things like "God hats fags" and other such horrible slurs within earshot of a funeral when possible. He and his group years ago also picketed Matthew Shepard's funeral. (He was the boy beaten to death when it was found out he was gay.)
