To Mr. Anonymous who claims that parents and God are on an equal playing field, you are wrong. Let me tell you why:
The reason that parents cannot kill their sons is because we live in a world of laws.
God however, is exempt from all human laws. God is neither subject to even the laws of Physics, nor Time itself.
He is Omnipotent, and created this world that we dwell in. As the creator of the Universe, He may do so as He pleases, and as stated previously, be "righteous in doing it".
God, in a matter of speaking, has the one true 'License To Kill' that which He has created.

Imagine the following scenario.
God always existed, there is no beginning and no end to his lifespan. So he sat around an infinite timespan before he got bored and created the universe. He did so in 6(!) days. It took him an infinite timespan to finally get of his arse and then stops working in 6 days.
We continue. After creating the earth it took him 4000 years to send his son to die for our sins. 4000 years before he thought that he might want people with him in heaven. For eternity. If you have to believe the people claming that the end of times is near, the earth will not live much beyond it's 6000th birthday. After that everything is returned to nothing and people are either in hell suffering for eternity, or in heaven sucking up to god for eternity.
So we have an infinite time before the world was created, 6000 years of existence and than an eternity of heaven or hell. Just what was the guy thinking? He got bored after an infinite time and then manages to get bored after 6000 years. Maybe we should wonder after how much time god is bored with the people in heaven and wipes them out or just swaps them with the ones from hell.

Beware! I know you had no intention of it, but you may be planting seeds for a new denomination of Christianity! (Keep in mind I'm only half joking with you here)
god is bored with the people in heaven and wipes them out or just swaps them with the ones from hell.
This may be the start of believing god gives a 50/50 chance of getting into heaven, such as a "lottery" or the flipping of a coin.
Also, the suggestion of god being bored may spawn a new Christian group which calls themselves "The Entertainers of God" or "God's Jesters". Church ceremonies will be more fucked up than ever, with people dressing as holy clowns or performing a Christian talent show. I'd better stop I'm beginning to creep myself out at the thought of it.
Well, that makes your version of God kind of a dick, but we'll let that go for now.
What you need to realize is that "omnipotence" is an impossible state. It can not exist. If someone is omnipotent, that means they have no limits, there is nothing they can not do. But they can't thwart their own abilities by doing something like, say the old standard, creating a rock so heavy they can not lift it. Well, if they can't do that, then they are limited. If they can create that rock, then they can't pick it up, and so either way they are limited. Any limitation on an omnipotent being renders them no longer omnipotent, so therefore "omnipotence" is an impossibe state.
The reason that parents cannot kill their sons is because we live in a world of laws.
Strange. I know somewhere in Leviticus there's a description of how you should stone your kid for breaking the 5th commandment (Honor your father & mother).
@God
Do what I say or I'll fucking kill you!
I'm so clever.
Some benevolent god. He's supposed to have gone to all the trouble of creating humanity, and then he gets all pissy over one little mistake and he's spent the rest of time tormenting humans, or slaughtering them outright. What kind of creator could have so little regard for the things they created?
God gave parents the right to kill their children. If you don't believe this, you are just one more moderate Christian who reads the bible wearing rose colored glasses.
Either it is literal or it's not. I am tired of this cherry picking. Maybe once you see the bible for the sick, self serving, perverted piece of tripe that it is we can put it behind us and get on with civilization.
"To Mr. Anonymous who claims that parents and God are on an equal playing field, you are wrong. Let me tell you why:"
First, let ME tell YOU why:
Parents are real, "God" is imaginary.
"The reason that parents cannot kill their sons is because we live in a world of laws."
Indeed, they had best not kill their children or society will severely punish them.
"God however, is exempt from all human laws. God is neither subject to even the laws of Physics, nor Time itself."
"God" is exempt from all laws because he is a fictional character. When one makes up a fictional character, one may claim for him/her whatever traits one wishes.
"He is Omnipotent, and created this world that we dwell in."
So goes the story, the fictional, made up, not real, story.
"As the creator of the Universe, He may do so as He pleases, and as stated previously, be "righteous in doing it"."
As "God" is a fictional character, he cannot actually do anything. He is claimed to be omnipotent in your stories, but you cannot show that he has actually, ever done anything.
As for being "righteous," just because someone says s/he is "righteous" means nothing. Equally, just because persons making up a fictional story claim one of their characters is "righteous" no matter what he does, that does not mean that that claim is true.
"God, in a matter of speaking, has the one true 'License To Kill' that which He has created."
No, even if "God" exists and even if "God" created the universe, it does not follow that it is somehow ethical for him to torture or murder people. Torture and murder are wrong no matter who or what is committing them.
You and your pals claim that I, because I am an atheist, lack ethics?
You see how your god works? He creates a law that he allows humans as a whole to thwart by making the killing of one's children illegal.
He says his laws are above mans, but I believe it also says man should obey the laws set before him by man.
ONce again he makes outrageous rules, makes it so complicated that one is literally damned if they do and damned if they don't, and makes no effort to clear up confusion which he knew from the beginning of time was going to exist.
The assuption that he wants people to kill their kids is sick, the assumption that since he made us he can fuck us up all he wants is sicker.
Get ahold of a dominatrix if you want someone to treat you like scum and tell you that you are a worthless sinner. At least it's a simpler version of the shameful penance you seek.
The way the Bible is written, it's like God is playing this sadistically lethal game with us in which the first rule is that he gets to constantly change all the other rules all the time, so that no matter what, he wins, and he's right to do so. And there's no appeal, because he's also the referee.
Sorry, but I don't play rigged games. I can't imagine why so many millions of people would want to, when the only thing that can happen is that they automatically lose.
Oh, and JustinGG, you totally cracked me up with that comment! Perfect!

God, in a matter of speaking, has the one true 'License To Kill' that which He has created."
If god can create a whole universe, he can easily create a licence to drive, or kill, or anything else.
So, when he created us to his image, he forgot some little details, according to your logic. Please, be more sensible.
"God, in a matter of speaking, has the one true 'License To Kill' that which He has created."
Best arguement against your religion, ever!
So, why is he our moral compass?. Following that logic, somebody has got to create him, to ensure morality.
Bryan, you FAIL. For two reasons:
1- Who created God?
2- It's only 00 agents of MI6 who have a Licence to Kill. Unless...:

...Jesus was captured in North Korea and tortured there for a year. One more thing: it was Ian Fleming who created James Bond.
Laws do not STOP you killing, they only punish you later. Would you rather go to prison for breaking mans law, or to hell for breaking Gods law. ?
Being unable to stop a magical sociopath does not make his conduct "right" or "moral".
Confused?
