Do you really think it was an accident that women were never permitted any voice in the governance of the Roman Republic or the great historical democracies such as Athens, Thebes, Imperial Britain, and Revolutionary America? Do you really believe it to be a mere coincidence that many modern democracies, including Germany, Italy, and the member states of the European Union, were not able to survive even 100 years of female suffrage?

No, we don't think it was an accident. We think it was ancient misogyny and systematic discrimination. We also don't think it's an accident that countries, where women have (almost) equal rights, and a posibiliy to decide when and how often to have children, are more prosperous and peaceful, than countries where men decides everything and women are not allowed to participate in society.

The suffrage movement began in the UK sometime before 1865. To my knowledge, the UK is still very much surviving, some 148 years later. Germany, Italy, and the other EU states are also surviving. The EU states that are worst off are the ones where women don't have as many rights as they do elsewhere in the EU. Btw, Germany and Italy ARE member states in the EU.

Well Victoria wasn't actually all that influential, which is surprising to us looking back because her likeness is plastered on utterly everything, but that's because she was a figurehead in the most literal sense of the word. She had a great deal of power on paper but she was so disinterested in actually weilding it that she never upset anyone. It was her distance from any decision making that ironically allowed her to be portrayed with near-deity status. It's under Victoria that Parliament, particularly under Gladstone and Disreali, really gains a lot of the power that it has today, and they got away with that by publicly sucking up to the monarch as much as possible while simultaneously doing whatever the hell they wanted.

But yeah, Vox is just talking shit again.

Uh, they were sexist douchenozzles like you? They never gave ladies the chance to prove themselves, doofus!
However, there were plenty of female monarchs who had a say in things, Victoria, Elizabeth, Isabella, etc. Let's not forget badass warrior queens like Boudicca & intellectual giants like Hypathia (even if these two were eventually defeated, they were still awesome chicks you wouldn't mess with in a battle of swords or debates).

Hey, Mr. Expert Historian. Women in the past have not only had power, they've had ULTIMATE power. They've been queens and empresses. Some of the greatest leaders of all time have been women. Wu Zetian conquered large amounts of land and expanded China's territory into central Asia and what is now Korea. Queen Victoria ruled over the largest empire in world history and even has a whole era named after her. What have YOU accomplished in comparison? And that's what this is all about: you want superiority, by default, over 50% of the population because you know that you haven't accomplished jack shit in your life. When your proudest achievement is being born with a penis then you are pathetic.

No. I think it was quite intentionally done by a bunch of power hungry patriarchal men who didn't want women to have any sort of control.

It's been a while since I looked on a map, but I'm pretty sure both Germany and Italy are still there, as is the EU. Perhaps you're just confused.

Italy first gained full female suffrage in 1945. It was a democracy then and its democracy shows no sign of ending, but it's not been a hundred years yet.

On the other hand, states like Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Kansas have had female suffrage for over a hundred years. Are we to take it that democracy in such Republican states is bankrupt?

Incidentally, property-owning women in Imperial Britain did have the vote in local elections from 1869, and in Australia and New Zealand (then thought of as part of Imperial Britain) by 1902. As for Revolutionary America, New Jersey had female suffrage; it was only afterward, in 1807, that it was abolished.

Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand: Pretty different countries in many ways. But when the Financial Crisis, or whatever you want to call it, hit the industrialised world, these countries coped very well. Chances are it had nothing to do with the fact that Australia and New Zealand had women in high positions of power, as well as being the first two democracies to institute women's suffrage (excepting theunfortunately racist laws both enacted early on). It also probably has nothing to do with the gender equality Italy and Germany have embraced since the fall of fascism in those countries. But we could easily claim such bullshit and be more correct than you.
