The really troubling thing is that I figured this must be out of context, so I went and read the whole thread, and then I read the article the thread was linking to, and I can't figure out if this particular individual is being sarcastic or not. Part of the people there sound horrified, part of them sound ecstatic. Hard to tell where this one falls... it would have made more sense to quote the ones who say outright that our current methods of execution are "soft on murderers".

Deterrence doesn't work. This is largely because, strange as it may seem, most criminals operate on the assumption that they won't get caught.
Well at least you admit that. Most capital punishment advocates say non-public executions are "more humane". Incidentally, no matter how you kill the prisoners, it's always completely wrong: public carnage fests are celebrations of brutal death, institutional neat and clean executions strive to minimise the human involvement and human emotion involved - sorry, dude, let's get this over with, *zap*.

Europe in general doesn't have a death penalty, and most Europeans regard countries that have is as being A tad barbaric.

Sorry people but I believe our current prison system is a joke. If we're rehabilitating them, then lets actually rehabilitate them. If we're punishing them, then a public caning is a lot more effective than locking them up like animals. Oh, and the guillotine is more humane than a lot of other forms of execution.
As far as the OP goes, you want deterrent? How about crucifixion? That worked well for the Romans. One hill on the main road into every town. For pure entertainment, the bronze bull from the Greeks was always a crowd pleaser.
