'In 2008, Judge Jones was awarded the American Humanist Association’s Humanist Religious Liberty Award at the World Humanist Congress in Washington, DC. In his acceptance speech, Judge Jones explained how he was blasted by Bill O'Reilly, Phyllis Schlafly, and Ann Coulter for the Kitzmiller decision. Judge Jones also remarked on the shortcomings of civics education and how the American public tends to have a limited understanding of the Constitution and the importance of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment and separation of church and state established by the Founding Fathers of the United States.'
Just as - via him still using the pre-1954 Pledge of Allegiance, which omits the words 'Under God', which is still valid - Jimmy Carter is proof there are non-fundie Baptists out there, and Dr. Buzz Aldrin is a devout Christian who can reconcile his beliefs with proven scientific fact, there are the likes of the Honourable Judge John E. Jones III: Conservatives who aren't dicks.
In the same way, Edward Heath was the last of the true Conservatives in the UK. Even before her rise to power, he had an absolute loathing for the Antichrist Maggie Thatcher (*spit*), so even though I've voted Labour all my life, he was someone on the opposite end of the political spectrum I could respect.
No wonder Judge Jones received that award, then. And deservedly so And as for the news update you gave me, no doubt his star will be on the ascendant, with Equal Rights groups, and the majority of people as a whole in the US: progressives. If the moderate Republicans were to finally purge themselves of the wingnut elements, mayhaps he represents the future of that party, should he run for political office...?
