AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Democrats called on a Republican state senator to resign Wednesday over what they described as a "prolific online history of racist and bigoted remarks," including a Facebook post suggesting that President Barack Obama's family members are part of the Islamic State group.
Sen. Michael Willette came under criticism this week for sharing a photo of Obama on Facebook that pretended to use the president's words, saying of the Islamic State group, "I'll deal with them at the family reunion."
Just before Democrats called for his resignation, Willette asked his colleagues for their forgiveness and promised his "mistake in judgment" won't be repeated. He said that his frustration over Obama's policies and performance over the years prompted him to make the inappropriate remarks.

That's what I'm talking about! Why doesn't something like that happen more often? Why are not more politicians called out on their slander and outright lies about their political opponents?
The very least it would force them to justify them and most likely to publicly denounce them.
He said that his frustration over Obama's policies and performance over the years prompted him to make the inappropriate remarks.
Oh, boohoo! You want to play in the big league, you have to put on your big boy trousers.
"He said that his frustration over Obama's policies and performance over the years prompted him to make the inappropriate remarks."
That performance being pulling America out of the Bush Depression, in spite of obstruction and delay from your party?
Are you part of the Islamic State group?
Is that why you hate America so much.
Yeah. I can see where Obama's performance in killing bin Laden, saving the US auto industry and pulling us back from the brink of the depression almost caused by your last incompetent idiot would be frustrating.
All your hard work tearing the country down and he has to go and step in just as you thought the poor might be almost ready to beg to work for you for $2.00 per hour. What a bastard.
He shouldn't be made to resign due to racism and bigotry, but due to childishness and immaturity.
In Sweden we have a similar problem with the Sweden Democrats.
(Yes, it's an ultra-right-wing party, even if they call themselves "Democrats". It's as "genuine" as the National Socialist German Workers' Party...)
Awww, the poor guy is so upset for having a half-black president that he couldn't help himself; this black man "made" him feel obligated to spread lies.
Yeah, Congressman, that's some fucked up logic.
How the fuck did you get a job again?
Wait... Maine has Democrats?
Maine: Where IQ, teeth, and temperature are often observed to be in the single digits.
You know, they're always complaining about Obama's "policies and performance" but they never seem to be able to specify exactly what the problems are.
The last guy I asked on Sodahead told me I was obviously too stupid to understand and then blocked me.
@breakerslion
Maine has gone Democratic in both of the last two presidential elections and is one of three states that voted gay marriage into legality.
Being frustrated by a President's politics doesn't allows you to lik him to a bunch of genocidal war criminals.
Learning to not speak when it is inconvenient is the moe important skill of a politician.
Apologizing means regretting one's actions but ultimately accepting and acknowledging responsibility for them, not blaming them on other people or things. If your party valued "personal responsibility" as much as it claims, then its members would be calling out the lack of it displayed in your non-apology and accordingly demanding your immediate resignation.
However, that hasn't happened. The only logical explanation is that most GOP members' calls for personal responsibility have been little more than ironic and disingenuous attempts to dodge having to account for one's stance on whatever issue elicited said call. And this will continue to be the most logical assumption of the motives behind most, if not all, further calls for "personal responsibility" from GOP members until the majority of them publicly and vocally condemns this lack of personal responsibility from inside their party.
This applies not merely in Maine, but on a national level. If the GOP collectively valued personal responsibility, then they would be collectively outraged by any flagrant lack of it displayed within any level of their ranks.

i.e. Even when insulting Obama, it's Obama's fault.
This freak also claimed to be the farthest thing possible from a racist because he had all kinds of friends back when he was in the military. He also bragged that he was proud of being able to restrain himself from posting bigoted material over the last few months.
Pro Tip: If you need to restrain yourself from posting racist bullshit and have indeed posted racist bullshit before and today? You're a freaking racist.
@Ebon
It's the politician's apology. Make it sound like you're apologizing while you're actually shifting the blame to the other party. Don't say "I'm sorry I called you a camel-fucking terrorist", say "I'm sorry you were offended by my joke". Don't say "I'm sorry I called half the country lazy moocher scum", say "I'm sorry you took my comments the wrong way". Everything's easy when you're good enough at deflection!
Although in this case I suppose it's closer to "why did you make me hit you" than any of the above. Same principle, though.
EDIT: @pete
He also bragged that he was proud of being able to restrain himself from posting bigoted material over the last few months.
Hah, seriously? He prides himself on almost being a decent human being for a little while? Goddamn, that bar's set so low even Hermes Conrad couldn't limbo it.
Yeah, 'cause Obamas stepped on so many toes.
"with all due respect and honestly, I'm sorry the sand Nigger took offense to that but Sambo there oughter stop being so damn uppity and get onto my shoe polishing"
You may never hear that in congress but Limbaugh's one late lunch away from that whole thing,, and know what? It'll be a joke, LOL Homeys.
Confused?
