Men and women have been banned from shaking hands in a district of Somalia controlled by the Islamist group al-Shabab.
Under the ban imposed in the southern town of Jowhar, men and women who are not related are also barred from walking together or chatting in public.
It is the first time such social restrictions have been introduced.
The al-Shabab administration said those who disobeyed the new rules would be punished according to Sharia law.
The BBC's Mohamed Moalimuu in Mogadishu says the penalty would probably be a public flogging.
The militant group has already banned music in areas that it controls, which include most of central and southern Somalia.

Aww, the Blue Meanies... yeh, that is such a great movie.
And the things that happen in Somalia are just sick. We live just once, and why should anyone suffer under these dsigusting conditions? People need contact, people need music. It is just wrong to impose such laws!
That gnashing sound you hear is the teeth of all of the jealous Christian fundamentalists here in the USA. It is something I will be sure to mention when people ask, "What's wrong with...
...teaching creationism along with evolution?
...having students pause for a moment of silence in class
...insisting that retail stores clerks say 'Merry Christmas'
...putting crosses up on public lands
...etc.
Meh. The backward Third World "nation" wracked by anarchy known as Somalia is the third-biggest shithole on the planet (the other two being North Korea and Burma-- sorry, Myanmar you evil dictator Than Shwe) If al-Shabab is the Taliban all over again, then I do not care. Let them destroy themselves so that they cannot harm anyone else.
And coming soon, no touching, of any kind, at all, ever.
(Somalia, doing its bit for world population control.)

You do not care about the people who are being oppressed by these outrageous rules??
How is such a lack of compassion possible?
Are you kidding? Try taking this up with the pirates - the guys walk about with RPGs in the streets.
Somalia Is lawless and imposing sharia won't do anything.
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free...
This is ridiculous. That said, having heard more than enough top 40 crap for a lifetime despite my efforts to avoid it (from family, roommates, businesses, etc.) I'm starting to think Al-Shahab got that part right.

@The Jamo: A perfect utopian theocracy, without the merest trace of temptation or secularism, where nothing distracts from the contemplation of Allah.
That's the fantasy, anyway. The reality is a nightmarish, backward totalitarian state ruled by hate and fear of anyone or anything that even remotely smacks of secularism, idolatry or heresy, where people remain silent on pain of death--not only for themselves, but for their friends, loved ones and associates.
Have fun with that, Somalia, I bet the whole supressing-basic-everything shit will go over without a hitch and you won't just utterly fall apart under the weight of your own stupidity like many before you.
@WMDKitty
Thankfully, no.
@ Anon:
Oh, I care. However, I have no delusions that the backwards Islamic world will noticeably improve in my lifetime, and I'm younger than most of the commentators here. Since that region of the world is a black hole where rationality and human decency come to die, it's best just not to think about it, in my opinion. After all, the only way that any outsider could conceivably do anything is by causing a war that would just be disastrous and be mostly ineffectual. Anywhere outside a select few places on this planet sucks.
You know what's the best part? I've read Koran. I am pretty positive there is nothing there that can be any kind of validation of such bans.
Yet again, I am not a fundie...
You know what's sick? This article made me appreciate the pirates. 'Cause at least they just kill people (or hold them to ransom).
I can't imagine living under those laws. I'd be immolating myself before long.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
