[After Judge Malott of NM ruled same sex marriages legal in New Mexico]

Christine Butler of Albuquerque, who opposes gay marriage and attended the hearing, said the judge's ruling violates her rights.

"I don't want to bring my children or go to places and see same-sex couples showing a lot of affection. ... That's against God's law," Butler said.

Everyone has a certain level of right to pretty much anything, and usually those rights interfere with the rights of others. The precious right to free speech treads all over the right of public individuals to live in privacy. My right to live in a certain house impacts pretty strongly on your right to live in it if it's your house I pick. So we grade them and decide that some rights are more important than others. Free speech is more important than a certain level of privacy and rights of ownership are goverend by who paid for what.

In this case your right to pretend gay people don't exist is rather trumped by the fact that they do, and would rather like to be legally treated as such.

Yes yes, we know, "Gays are icky" and you often love to scream your favorite little phrase... "Won't anyone please think of the children!", and how you love to carry on about how horrible it all is. But you are just going to have to deal with the fact that gays exist, whether you like it or not, and that they deserve the same rights as everyone else.

I know I'll probably never get a satisfactory answer to this, but how are your rights are being violated, exactly?

You do have the right to teach your children whatever you want, no matter how much it warps them. This is well established. You even have the right to say whatever you want about gay marriage.

But two things.

First, your rights do not trump another's unless their expression of their rights is a threat to you. (Actual harm, not destroying your twisted fantasies.)
And, second, Mother Nature disagrees with you entirely.

Tell it to the judge, Chrissy. Considering how your butthurt about Roe vs. Wade has politically availed you naught for 40 years, the only possible way you could repeal such - and thus get your way, re. DOMA etc (DADT, Prop. 8) - is to tear up that nasty US Constitution.
