I mean, hell, every US president since we've had the bomb has been an avowed Christian of some denomination or other, and we never deployed nuclear weapons against the Soviets or the Chinese on the grounds that we'd be welcomed into Heaven by Jesus for opposing communism. Likewise, despite their atheistic disregard for life and human freedom, the Soviets never deployed their own nukes in their unstoppable quest for world domination

(what emphasis?)
Communism =/= atheism.
Atheism =/= communism.
Neither of us have used our nukes against the other because of something called "Mutually Assured Destruction," wherein we each had/have enough nuclear weapons to annihilate the Earth multiple times.
In other words, "You fire at me, I fire at you, and we all go BOOM."
I fail to see the point this is making. Despite the different attitudes of the countries, neither has deployed nukes, yet somehow one of these countries is still evil, even though it has done its part to avoid the mutually assured destruction.
He really doesn't seem that bad. Later in the thread he posted this:
"@ Skyland:
Since it's the internet, I realize there's a bit of a tone-of-voice problem there. Allow me to clarify:
(1) I'm an atheist.
(2) The point was that the caricatured view one takes of Muslims with nuclear weapons ("They'll use them because they'll just go to their 72 virgins") is no more valid than any caricatured view one might apply to the US's traditionally Christian leadership or the Soviet Union's atheist leadership.
Sure, CPSU was never the authoritative body on atheistic morality, and US propaganda was never the authoritative body on the CPSU either. The point is that despite genuine and perceived differences in ideology and outlook, people seem to share an aversion to incineration by nuclear fire. Moreover, these caricatures of our metaphysical beliefs did not result in their supposed real-world consequences. A US-USSR nuclear exchange has not happened. A US-Russia, US-China, or Pakistan-India nuclear exchange has not happened. Is an Israel-Iran exchange more likely than a US-USSR one was or a Pakistan-India exchange might be? I don't think so."
(It should not need to be said that atheists in general do not disregard human life and freedom.)
The Soviet Union was "unstoppable"? By the way, why don't you mention the still ongoing American "quest for world domination"?
Er...
Communism gave us the following...
Healthcare, Workers Rights, Education, Weekends, Child Labour Laws, Universal Suffrage...
Its a fair few things we take for granted... Pure capitalism thinks putting children in mines and in sweatshops is "good".
Likewise, despite their atheistic disregard for life and human freedom, . . .
As opposed to the christian one . . .
Contrary to what you may believe, the Russians are nowhere near as stupid as the popular media in your country may lead you to believe.
You, on the other hand...
"I mean, hell, every US president since we've had the bomb has been an avowed Christian of some denomination or other, and we never deployed nuclear weapons against the Soviets or the Chinese on the grounds that we'd be welcomed into Heaven by Jesus for opposing communism."
Uh, no. The only thing that kept that from happening was more sanity than insanity and the M.A.D. gambit.
"Likewise, despite their atheistic disregard for life and human freedom, the Soviets never deployed their own nukes in their unstoppable quest for world domination."
You seem to not realize that if you launch a fucking nuclear weapon at a country that has them also or is allied with said target country then you will be obliterated from the face of the Earth shortly thereafter.
The lack of foresight people such as yourself display is astonishing.
So, in other words, religion or lack thereof made absolutely no difference in the ultimate outcome.
I'm not surprised that the OP is actually an atheist. Nothing fundy about this quote; it's a fact.
I recommend that people actually read a bit of the thread before submitting one out-of-context quote to FSTDT. Too many misconstrued quotes and parodies are being submitted and approved.
It was against the JAPANESE. Fucking simpleton.
EDIT:
Wow. another wasted quote. Dammit, i gotta read these responses before i respond myself.
Hmmm...I do think he is right in saying that the belief in "super-magical death reward palace" hasn't led to dramatic, quasi-suicidal/mega-homicidal tactics in the past that one would expect from people with such a belief. Though, logically, it would hold that in a world where the doctrines that they speak of as fact were a reality, it would not only be acceptable, but ideal.
Tells about the inability of faith to overcome common sense and biological survival instinct, huh? They know that staying alive is the key, and that latent idea reigns them in, even if their ideologies twist their minds into thinking otherwise.
The main point that everyone's missed is that opening line.
Of course they proport to be "men of god" - an atheist would never get elected in the USA.
They would rather elect a pigeon than an atheist.
Confused?
