This debate is occurring because of the Supreme Court's ruling that said that we must conduct ourselves under the Common Article III of the Geneva Convention. And that Common Article III says that there will be no outrages upon human dignity. It's very vague. What does that mean, "outrages upon human dignity"?

I'm reminded of the courts trying to define "obscenity," one judge stating "I know it when I see it." Shouldn't most adults be able to recognize "outrages against human dignity?" Of course, we have to cover for the slowest members of our society, so, yes, "outrages against human dignity" really should be better defined.
Well Georgie, I'm not surprised you don't know what "human dignity" means, but I'll help you out with a definition of the word "outrage." It's the feeling of a majority of the world's people toward you and your administration.
No reference to God, or gays, or abortion, or any of the other pet causes. Not fundie.
This needs to be under "Assholes Say the Darndest Things."
Perhaps it qualifies as "Political Fundie?" After all, he is altering established reality in order to agree with his predetermined conclusion...
outrages : 1. To offend grossly against (standards of decency or morality) commit an outrage on.
2. To produce anger or resentment in.
upon : on (in any of various senses, used as an equivalent of on with no added idea of ascent or elevation, and preferred in certain cases only for euphonic or metrical reasons).
human : 1. of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or having the nature of people: human frailty. 2. consisting of people: the human race. 3. of or pertaining to the social aspect of people: human affairs. 4. sympathetic; humane: a warmly human understanding.
noun 5. a human being.
dignity : The quality or state of being worthy of esteem or respect.
You'd be surprised how useful a basic grasp of literacy skills can be, monkey boy.
Julian, got it right.
Look, why not just let the Leader lead by example? Try it all on him. Anything HE finds outrageous performed on him can be defined as an "outrage". Look, finally a reason to trust the man at the top...
What does that mean, "outrages upon human dignity"?
How about a naked, handcuffed prisoner in a contorted position; a prisoner apparently sodomizing himself with an object, guards threatening prisoners with dogs, hooded prisoners being forced to masturbate, a naked prisoner handcuffed to a bed with a woman's underpants on his face ...
Is it actually hard to tell if those things are outrages upon human dignity?
Waaait a minute.
"In this new era, our challenge is to harness the power of science to ease human suffering without sanctioning the practices that violate the dignity of human life."
So...stem cell research counts as violating the dignity of human life, but, say, what's been going on in the Middle East doesn't...?
An outrage upon human dignity Is a PROFOUND violation of human dignity, A crime so vile that those who commit it or condone it, MUST be stricken from the universe.
Its any ABOMINATION that can be commited against a human by a subhuman monster.
Sigh. Unfortunately, only the losers are held responsible for their actions during wartimes. Bush may have started this war, ripped apart the Geneva Conventions and Constitution, and commit war crimes on a grand scale, but he won't be tried for his crimes unless we lose the war he started.
Hopefully, our new congress will impeach the bastard, but then I still won't get to see him defenestrated.
Most of the other Americans on this board are feeling enraged, worried, upset, or ashamed that people from their own country could elect a guy who only works for the rich and approves of torture, but I have it worse. I wasn't even allowed to vote.
At first I thought it was some forum poster. In which case, you know, it makes sense, subjectivity and all that.
But no. It's the goddamn president and he doesn't know what constitutes inhumanity in a nation of freed men. Ah, here, yes, woo, still no gay marriage.
"What does that mean, "outrages upon human dignity"?"
Just ask your pal in the Repubican party, John McCain:

I'm suuuuure he enjoyed all those beatings, and never considered them 'outrages upon his human dignity'.
Amirite?
Oh, and try saying that to all the other vets of Vietnam & Korea who were POWs - to their faces.
@whitewater55:
Except that in context, the definition of sex was clear and, while Monica was having sex with him, he was not technically having sex with her. And that out of context, a significant proportion of Americans do not believe fellatio to be sex and he could reasonably have believed he was not having sex in a less formal sense of the word.
> What does that mean, "outrages upon human dignity"?
It means everything you fucking did, you callous bag of shite.
Confused?
