Why was God so harsh with those in idolatry?
We must understand that God dealt very harshly because it was through the people of Israel that the Messiah would later come. Satan, in his perpetual effort to oppose God, sought to have the people of God fall into false worship and through intermarriage with other people to destroy the messianic line and make not only the promises of God null and void but also destroy means by which the Messiah could be born. If this could be accomplished, then none would have any hope of deliverance from sin. Therefore, we see in the Old Testament God being very harsh and strict according to the Law.

It's almost like this incompetent "god" has to keep slaughtering people to get what he wants. Some plan eh?
Or it's a bunch of retroactive story-telling bullshit from Slick all the way back to bronze age goatherds.
Omni-potent god or truckload of apologetic mythology. You decide.
Yeah, yeah, "chosen people" and all that. I'm sure you must know that every group sees themselves or their religion to be The One. A lot of people out there, hoping for heaven, fearing hell, and whistling in the dark ---- bullshit, all of it.
Sounds like the god of yours didn't know whether his plan was going to work or not, Matt.... making him not omniscient.
Tell me this matt.... if Satan knew that God is all powerful and all knowing, then Satan would know that anything he tried to do to thwart god was not only already known to god, but the outcome of that plan determined by God by God being all powerful. Therefore Satan would know anything he tried to do to thwart god would either be futile, or would actually be exactly what God wanted him to do. Realizing this, why would Satan bother to do anything at all?
Mattie: did you know that the Israelites traced ancestry through the father? Maybe Joseph was a descendant of David, but, according to your mythology, he wasn't Jesus father. Mary's ancestry doesn't count. So, I guess Satan succeeded as Jesus isn't of the line of David.
It takes a book the size of the OED to list all the complicated apologetics
to alibi the bible, and still, it's the biggest loser, ever.
I'll have to add that one to my, "Wheel of Excuses."
Meanwhile, in a galaxy far far away, the reanimated corpse of Darth Vader and the remnants of the Imperial Forces are attempting to construct an even larger run-on sentence that they hope will defeat matt slick, the Christian Apologist, once and for all and regain the title for the Dark Side of the Force by using every conceivable sentence-splicing conjunction and comma at their disposal with far more accuracy, but without creating a mass so dense as to collapse into a black hole.
"Why was God so harsh with those in idolatry? "
Because he's a petty, insecure narcissist? Seems a much simpler explanation than the one you offered, and according to Occam's Razor...
God is a jealous bloke.
The more fundie talks, the more reasonable it sounds that our supposed god is the god-left-behind, or the god who flunked the deity tests, who was given a tiny universe that was more or less set to work by itself so that the useless deity couldn't destroy much. But, he meddled with the minds of some of the more gullible of the inhabitants, and mucked it up anyway.
But we see Old Testament God failed since 30 AD Palestine was according to the Gospels a shitty place morally Jesus needed to save. So who gives a shit if they worshipped idols, Jesus wouldn't have approved of them any more by his own damn philosophy.
Not to mention, you make your God out to be rather weak compared to the, well, godlike strength he has in the Old Testament. I guess this is what you get when you don't accept the Calvinist God?
@Mister Spak
To be fair, the Assyrians who carved that in the first place wouldn't have minded doing the same to other nation's gods.
Therefore, we see in the Old Testament God being very harsh and strict according to the Law.
...and he's not much different now.

He's the George W. Bush of the universe.
No, wait, he's a trinity = he's the Three Stooges of it.
@Wyzard
Mary is supposed to be Joseph's cousin, making her of the line of David.
Please ignore the cousin fucking and the fact the Bible gives two different genealogies for Joseph. /fundie
