(Title of article: 21-YEAR-OLD ESCAPES JAIL AFTER PULLING OFF MUSLIM MOTHER'S HEADSCARF)
He should have been given an award, not a suspended sentence. I feel like pulling off those headscarfs myself. Muslims simply do not have any right to enter Western countries and expect to bring their dark culture with them. If governements don’t force Muslims to comply, then people will ultimately have to do their job for them.

uh Michael, the guy didn't escape from prison, he got a suspended sentence so he's escaping from having to go to jail.
Although, I'd be willing to bet that if someone yanked the crucifix off a Christian's neck there'd be an outcry at the descent of society into madness.
While I'm not terribly fond of people who immigrate to my country and make no effort whatsoever to integrate into its culture, but rather maintain themselves as a separate subgroup, they do have a perfect right to do so. Their right to do so is in fact a fundamental aspect of my culture, and one we spent painful centuries developing.
Any attempt to force someone to comply with my culture would in fact be a betrayal of it.
So are you going to go pulling heads carves off gang member's heads too?
Are you going to pull head scarves off women just wearing them because it's raining?
Are you going to start pulling off Amish women's bonnets?
And they tell *us* to get a life.
This is not a matter of "integration" it's a matter of culture and religious freedom.
Women can wear whatever they like on their damn heads, and still be an "integrated" part of our society.
Headscarves are no more a part of a "dark culture" than any other religious observance is. Perhaps the Hindu's should be forced to eat beef, since thats part of western culture? Should Jews be forced to drive on the sabbath, because you do?
Enough with the closet racism.
To be fair, Muslim women wearing the burka are completely incompatible with Western society. It's a misogynistic ideal that only increases voluntary apartheid.
That said, pulling off headscarves is NOT the right way to solve the problem.
Well, people say that those who come from other cultures should integrate into our society, but at the same time, our society sometimes hinders and singles out those who are trying to do exactly that. Here in Europe it's often hard for Muslim women to find work when they wear a headscarf, it doesn't matter whether they were born and raised here, are fluent in the country's language and finished school with good grades. People don't like to employ them and complain about 'lack of integration' because of a piece of cloth.
oh and btw headscarf =/= burka
The hijab [the headscarf as opposed to the overall Hijab doctrine] is supposed to signal and to some extent guarantee chastity. I believe there has been a similar headscarf meme throughout traditional European societies, but I agree with those that say the burqa is just too extreme for secular cultures.
On the same token, I feel that a headscarf lends a bit of mystery to a woman's natural attractiveness. But that's me....
@ Nic
Very very true, and I think this would have been quite frightening for the woman involved. I think if I had been wearing a hat for example, and a crazy guy runs over to me and starts trying to pull it from my head, that would scare me. How much more frightening then, to this woman who had just heard this man screaming racial abuse prior to approaching her.
My two cents- if people choose to wear a headscarf, that's their business. And forcing people not to wear something is, to my mind, as bad as forcing someone to wear something. Let alone running about forcibly removing items of clothing from people.
To reprise my earlier post, I don't think we can be too judgmental here as the guy who did this is genuinely legally retarded.
Where's that Sean Connery pic when you want it?
I get it, Tezza. You don't like Muslims but you don't know why.
Me, I hate girls in bikinis. I'd pull off their tops and bottoms so fast...
If a woman chooses to wear a headscarf, then that's her business. As long as it's her choice and no one is forcing her to wear one, it's perfectly fine. How would you feel if I ran up to you and ripped off your cross? What the guy did was stupid, immature, and insensitive.
But I also agree that the burka is too extreme. In fact, it freaks me out to see women covered from head to toe with only their eyes showing. It looks so uncomfortable that I can't imagine how they would ever want to wear it.
My dad once had a conversation with a Muslim Egyptian doctor in which the doctor scoffed at the burka, saying that most of the time, it was just there to show off how religious the wearer was. I remember a similar scenario during the holiday season, when I saw a car with an immense menorah strapped onto the roof. I suppose that a Christian equivalent would be wearing a gigantic cross for all the world to see.
But I digress. The point is, the headscarf is not the burka. In fact, in the late 19th - early 20th century, many female Eastern European immigrants wore headscarves, not because of their religion, but because it was the style at the time. Should the immigration authorities have ripped off their scarves, too? Idiot.
So, scantily dressed women, bad. Women who wear Hijab, bad too. What's the problem with this mysoginists?
Read the first amendment lately?
You know, I'd much rather see more women wearing headscarves than more women wearing overly-tight jeans and bellyshirts. Plus it seems like it would be useful for cold weather and bad hair days and such. As long as they don't feel pressured into wearing it.
My governement is supposed to protect a woman's right to wear her hijab, if its her choice to do so. That's that bit about the bill of rights.
You know, because there's no dress code... yet.
Wearing a headscarf is bringing a "dark culture" to the USA? Wow, it doesn't take much to intimidate a fundie.
And, Tezza, keep your hands to yourself. Ripping off women's headscarves will get you arrested for assault.
Why do I get the feeling that if the subject was that silly little drama queen who was pissing and moaning because the school wouldn't make an exception to its no-jewelery policy for her "purity ring", Tezza would be singing a very different tune...?
On a side note, I noticed a similarity between religions and racists: both groups have no problem with indoctrinating the intellectually challenged.
So you wouldn't be offended if I tore off your cross? What about your hat? Because, seriously, if you want to blind yourself to the fact that other culters exist and are just as prosperous as ours, then just think of it as a hat, you bigit little cockbite.
He should have been given an award, not a suspended sentence. I feel like pulling off those cross necklaces myself. Christians simply do not have any right to enter any country and expect to bring their dark culture with them. If governements don’t force Christitans to comply, then people will ultimately have to do their job for them.
That's that! Being an immigrant myself, I believe that when you move to a different country you should assimilate to an extend - learning the language would be an important step to successful immigration. Since USA is a country with religious freedon, giving up your religion is not neccessary, even though Tezza wants you to think this!
Do you go around shaving the Amish too?
@[b]werewolf & Papabear : Agreed. Bras and bikinis are so offensive, we should be rid of them right now!
@[b]tracer: Only if they're hot >8P
You're right, someone should have walked up to that guy & strangled him with the scarf he removed.
...I'll put it in simpler terms for you: The government's "job" in this scenario would be to promote FREEDOM OF RELIGION.
All this guy accomplished is being a dickhole. It would be sort of like if I came up to you & stamped "Jesus blows" on your forehead, or something.
Furthermore, their culture is not "dark." Though I disagree with it---to use the very most docile term I can think of---Muslims are not Satanic, if that's what you're getting at.
Christian Fundies have some crazy-ass rules, too. "Marry your rapist," for example.
The hijab is kinda a touchy issue. Lots of well-meaning Western liberals have gone up to women wearing them and gave them lectures on how their wearing the hijab is a sign of self-oppression, etc. Surprisingly (at least to those well-intentioned Westerners), many Muslim women who choose to wear it don't find the hijab to be oppressive at all, and don't take too well to being instructed as to what their sufferings were.
So, yeah, there's really nothing good about just running around and yanking things off of people. That's just epic loads of line-crossing fail right there.
I don't really see why he would get a jail sentence, but you shouldn't encourage that kind of behaviour either (or escaping from jail either; if they can get out, then what about murderers/rapists/etc.?). How would you appreciate it if someone tried to force YOU to comply with their culture? I'm quite sure you wouldn't like it.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
