Tricky thing about freedom of speech, you have no right to be saved from offence. You don't like what I have to say, tough shit.
But here's the best bit. Along with the right to free speech comes the responsibility to use it wisely. That means thinking before you speak and respecting other people's right to free speech.
Yes, you shouldn't go around offending people just because you can, but maybe some people's beliefs need to be offended.
What is blasphemy?
Let me tell you. It is my expression of my honest opinion of your idiotic beliefs.
Sadly Ireland has gone down the road of making blasphemy a crime. I have little doubt but that will soon be remedied. It is an unenforceable law.
Besides, without ever opening my mouth, I can still think what you would consider blasphemous. So there!
Blasphemy is a victimless crime.
The answer to the problem is quite simple, let the offended deity in any blasphemy come to court to pursue its own case. The followers of said deity do not have recognized standing in the court as they are not aggrieved by the blasphemy.
That should pretty much take care of any cases that come up.
So, considering how many other various and sundry faiths there are, how many charges of blasphemy against those shall we bring against you just for saying that your religion is the right one (thus implying that all others are wrong)? Say, about 15,000 or so? For each and every time you make such a statement?
~David D.G.
Shall I call whine-one-one and have them send a whaaaambulance?
And why is it that nobody cares about the feelings of atheists? For some reason it's perfectly OK to call us all immoral evil heathens, but we can't say that religion is harmful?
I consider my religion to be Freedom of Speech. My holy document is the U.S. Constitution, especially the First Amendment. Laws prohibiting freedom of speech are blasphemy to me.
ooh. You see, taking away free speech is the first step towards fascism. You can have freedom and be offended. Or you can not have freedom and still, most likely, be offended.
I try to not care but, despite my instincts, I can't help but wonder if Ph. Pöllitzer considers claims like "Allah is the Devil" to be blasphemous. I'm guessing that his "blasphemy alarm" only goes off when it's his particular brand of Christianity being lampooned.
How about we put together a blasphemy panel with representatives from each major religion and, of course, a token atheist. When someone submits a claim that their religion was blasphemed a yes or no vote will be taken and the simple majority wins. Since most of you have no tolerance for any other religions I'll bet no one would ever get the votes to convict.
We here in Ireland actually have a new Blasphemy law. You can be fined 25k for it, apparently. No joke. It's not even some remnant medieval law, it was introduced mid-2009. The stench of fail round here...
The existence of other religions is blasphemy to some religions, to say nothing of scientific evidence. Outlawing either is, respectively, a human rights violation and just plain stupid.
Oh, poor butt-hurt fundies...
Bet you'd call it "stepping over your rights" if it were against the law to hurt the feelings of atheists though, right?
That your feelings might be hurt by my calling virgin birth, resurrection and salvation by faith (or any other means) is your problem. If you don't want me to hurt your fellings, stop making ridiculous claims.
Then stop telling people yours is the only god. In my religion, that's blasphemy.
(Yeah, pretty much impossible to prosecute, Pölli.)
Fuck Jesus
Fuck Allah
Fuck Mohammad
Fuck God
Fuck Krishna
Fuck Buddha
Fuck Woden
..and Fuck your Holy Ghost.
P.S. - who gets to define blasphemy? The Christians, Atheist, or Muslims?
Only if the direct victom of the blasphemy will show up in court to defend him/herself.
In other words, if I say God damn, then God will need to take me to court to sue me/file charges against me. John the Baptist, on the other hand, will NOT be elligible to press charges on me for the same offence as he was NOT wronged in the process...only God was.
The correct response to this law should be to submit portions of all holy texts that are offensive to other religions (and there are plenty) and demand prosecution.
Islamic denial of Jesus' divinity - blasphemy.
Christian claims of Jesus' divinity - blasphemy to Jews and Muslims.
etc

All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That'll set you free
Just give 'em all your money and they'll set you free
Free for a fee
They all claim that they have 'the Answer'
When they don't even know the Question
They're just a bunch of liars
They just want your money
They just want your consciousness
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That'll set you free
Just give 'em all your money and they'll set you free
Free for a fee
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That'll set you free
Just give 'em all your money and they'll set you free
Free for a fee
All religions suck
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
All religions make me wanna BLEAH
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me ILL

Indeed, it must greatly hurt the feelings of satanists every time the Catholic church goes along on it's slanderous campaign against their man-loving god Satan.
And I say man-loving, for if your stories are to be believed, all the good stuff (like the ability to think for ourselves) are due to him.
So if all blasphemy is illegal
What happens when a Jew says Jesus wasn't the Messiah?
When a Muslim says that Jesus was only a prophet?
When a Christian says that Mohammad was in league with Satan?
When a Buddhist says there's no such thing as a creator god?
Are you seeing the problem with the Irish law? According to that law all of these are both illegal and protected. The lawyers are going to have a field day.
First Amendment, motherfucker. That's America. Don't like it, you can go to Iran, you commie-terrorist muslim baby-killing God-hater.
Unless gawd comes down to file a slander or libel lawsuit, I'll continue calling him "just another impotent, useless deity".
Man-made, fairy-tale, imaginary, illusory, ficticious, absurd, incompetent, vain, feckless god.
Come get me, Ireland!
"Blasphemy should be dealt with as a crime. It deeply hurts any believer of the respective religion."
In what way? Do people say 'Pöllitzer Christ!' when they hit their thumb with a hammer? No? Well then. Why should you care what people say?
The phrase 'Blasphemy is a victimless crime' exists for a reason, bollockbrain.
Thing is, in Great Britain, they might actually believe this!
"Freedom of Speech" is something British law most certainly does NOT guarantee.
Does he even know what he's saying?
Couldn't I then, as a pagan, take christian to court for proselytizing? They're blaspheming against my gods!
Blasphemy should be dealt with as a crime.
I think what you mean to say is "Blasphemy against my religion should be dealt with as a crime. ", Because I think you fail to understand that to some religions the very fact that you exist and do not worship that religion is blasphemy to them.
It deeply hurts any believer of the respective religion.
Well boo-fucking-hoo! get over yourself. Just because you see something as "blasphemy" should not mean that nobody else can engage in that activity for fear of offending you. Some religions see inoccuous things such as dancing, drinking alcohol, or eating pork as blasphemous. Should everyone else never dance, never down a pint of bitter, or never eat a sausage because someone somewhere might find that offensive? The whole concept is utterly ridiculous.
@tracer ""Freedom of Speech" is something British law most certainly does NOT guarantee."
Britian's 1998 Human Rights Act does exactly that. It implements the European Convention on Human Rights which contains the following articles...
Article 9: Freedom of thought, conscience and religion
1 Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.
2 Freedom to manifest one’s religion or beliefs shall be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.
Article 10: Freedom of expression
1 Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This Article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises.
2 The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary.
So is Mahomet God's Prophet then?
If you say yes, you blasphemed to the christian religion.
If you say no, same thing for islam.
either way, you have now comitted a crime.
have a nice day
Blasphemy should be dealt with as a crime.
As all different religions are blasphemous towards each other, you are effectively calling for outlawing all religions.
Well tough. I'll say that your fictional character is a genocidal, sexist, racist, abusive, paranoid... wait, I'll just let richard dawkins say it. “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” If I want to. And if you hold him up as the root of all morallity, you deserve to be offended.
Confused?
