What has thinking for yourself ever got you? I equate that to living in a dark room: "Hurray! I am thinking for myself... now what..."

Who told you that it was like living in a dark room? Evidently you are telling us that you don't think for yourself so that means that someone told you that thinking for yourself was like living in a dark room. Or did you come up with that argument by yourself? Doesn't that mean that you thought for yourself? Giveing you an argument, however stupid, to defend your position.
What does thinking for yourself have to do with dark rooms? Lets see if I can make a better analogy...
Not thinking for yourself is like sitting in a dark room, but not doing anything about it because nobody told you to do otherwise. You die, cold and alone, in your dark room.
Thinking for yourself is like sitting in a dark room, then realizing that you can turn on the light, install a heater, some chairs, maybe a TV and computer, inviting your friends over for some interesting discussions, and generally having a good time.
See the difference?
Don't knock dark rooms - every so often, what people who think for themselves really need is an hour or two without any distractions. Of course, then they go out of the room and build a better future, having thought about how to do it.

Why am I hearing Dr Zoidberg from Futurama when I read this?
Good thing I wasn't drinking anything when I read that. Brilliant.
The "dark room" statment was in terms of understanding the Kingdom of God. In terms of the Kingdom of God, "intelligent" talk and premise is present, but is in a dark room that is irrelevenat to the scope. God works in eternity.
In Summary, yes we can do amazing things.. but it only matters when it is for God. Otherwise, it is in a dark room irrlevant.. Hurray!

Let's see: A fantastic education, self-esteem, friends, happiness, freedom from superstition, and respect for humanity. I'm sure the list could go on.
Just because you need a book to tell you what to do doesn't mean the rest of us are that gullible.

The clarification makes no more sense than the original nonsense.
Nice spiral of lunacy there AB...
1. I don't like being contrained by reality and the finality of death, oh look, there's a fairy tale about eternity and living happily ever after.
2. Oh, but that makes my current life look even more pathetic, I know I'll make up a pile of crap about it being all about the fairy tale in 1.
3. Repeat 2 until insane!

Haha! I, like Crosis, am glad I was not drinking anything when I read that.

Thinking for yourself is what makes you a person and not a robotic serving follower of the first person to give you orders.
I equate that to living in a dark room: "Hurray! I am thinking for myself... now what...
If you equate thinking for yourself to living in a dark room, then you aren't thinking for yourself. You're believing whatever your pastor/cult leader/master told you to believe and (s)he naturally wants to prevent you from starting to think for yourself! Then you wouldn't be his/her slave anymore!

Sigh. You don't think for yourself, so this will go right over your head, but I'll say it anyway.
There is no Kingdom of God. The idea of a "kingdom of God" is a lie used to exploit people who are willing to let others do their thinking for them. Your priest/pastor/cult leader has convinced you that your own thinking is worthless, and you should simply blindly believe what he says. He does this for a reason and you put that reason in the collection plate at your church.
In Summary, yes we can do amazing things.. but it only matters when it is for God. Otherwise, it is in a dark room irrlevant.. Hurray!
No, your pastor has convinced you that things only matter if they're done for God. He convinces you that your own thoughts and deeds are not important, that you need God, and that you can only find God through him (conveniently) and a book that gives him special status (conveniently, again). The whole church is one big scam it prays on people who are willing to stop thinking for themselves and blindly believe and do what they're told. (*dodges tomatoes thrown due pray/prey pun*)
"No, your pastor has convinced you that things only matter if they're done for God."
No, it wasn't my pastor. It was Jesus. And it wasn't a process of being "convinced". It is a realization and acceptence.

Jesus, assuming he existed in the first place, is dead. He has been dead for centuries. He could not have convinced you of anything.
Somebody, whether it was your pastor/priest, relative, friend, random stranger, obnoxious missionary, or other person convinced you that thinking for yourself is bad. If you're not thinking for yourself, then any reasons you give me are merely rationalizations supplied by other people, perhaps those with a vested interest in keeping you blind and unthinking.
I cannot assume that anything you say reflects your own thoughts if you claim you don't have any thoughts of your own.
The Dark = away from God
The Light = in God
All works without God = Dark room irrlevancy.. Hurray!
This is just a vague and nearly meaningless assertion. It's one step above a word salad. You may think it's a pressing reason to stay in the Church, but if you aren't thinking for yourself, then it's merely a jumble of words that you think is a reason because you were told it's a reason.
You will only be exploited if you don't think for yourself.
"Jesus, assuming he existed in the first place, is dead. He has been dead for centuries. He could not have convinced you of anything"
After Jesus physically died, many things have happen that He has inspired; examples include the writing of the gospels so that others will know and paul's(at one time a harsh critic to the gospel) tireliess missions to communicate the gospel of Jesus.
I disagree. Jesus can be a reason for people to act or think in some way. The evidence is too profound...Rember, Paul had no pastor "convince" him. He was touched directly by Jesus. And that still happens today.
And as info, Jesus was always alive and still is.
Prove my work?? Funny..
Jesus died on the cross as a criminal 2,000 years ago. And still today people are talking about it. Don't you think there is something to it???? ... be realistic now...
Test this out: think for your self through life. If during this time you still feel bummed out, thinking for yourself is a dark room type of finality.
Confused?
