Men who join the military are responding to widespread, innate male urges—the urge to break things and kill people, for example. Women who join the military are, by contrast, outliers in their sex. They are eccentric and prone to behave eccentrically. As a designated victim group, they are especially susceptible to the associated pathologies, e.g., victim hoaxes for attention, spite, or cash reward.

Okay, doctor. Let's get some soldiers to brutally rape you, and then we'll see how long it takes for your "pathology" to manifest in the form of you reporting the crime, er, hoax.
If men really had uncontrollable urges to break things and kill people, then, instead of being allowed to run the world, they would need to be locked up in quilted hotels.
since when does a modern military need people with urges to break things and kill people? modern armed forces are structured around teamwork within strict hierarchies; they need people who can and will take orders from people designated to give them orders. secondary to that, they need people who can think straight and make sensible decisions under high stress. the whole raging-berserker, kill-kill-kill froth-at-mouth business went out with the dark ages; undisciplined barbarians get their arses kicked by disciplined, organized military forces every time.
funny thing, teamwork and level thinking do not depend on having a set of twig-and-berries...
But men don't have an innate urge to break things and kill people, or it would be very much more common than it is. Even if we were to take this rather silly argument for why people enlist seriously, why is it that even in wartime most men have to be conscripted? The men who join are then "outliers in their sex."
Even so, the military is very good at instilling discipline. That raises the reasonable expectation that soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines ought not to harass female members of the military sexually. And that's what this article is supposed to be about, sexual harassment. But John Derbyshire's argument would serve equally well as a defense of murder.
Yeah, because what we really need in the military is people who will kill their sergeant because he made them clean the latrine or wipe out half a village because their girlfriend broke up with them. We tried that in Vietnam with the whole "go to war or go to jail" thing, and it didn't turn out so well.
"Men who join the military are responding to widespread, innate male urgesthe urge to break things and kill people, for example."
Well then. These particular 'men' have just proved that they don't possess the Self Control and therefore the discipline to be in the professional armed forces, unlike their comrades who do .
Destroyed your own argument much, Johnnie-boy?
I was in the usn. There's nothing fancy about it. It's like a normal 9-5 job (well, more liketo 7-5). Deployments are actually quite dull. Same routine, 12 on 12 off was what my division did. I never got the urge to rape anyone.
So, you are telling us that you have innate urges to break things and kill people .
We should keep an eye on you, preferably through a little observation window, shouldn't we?
And way to insult everyone, male or female.
Why would there be an innate urge to break things and kill people? I don't really see it.
For thousands of years, we were hunter gatherers, living in relatively small groups. The only way that killing other people would be useful is in fighting rival hunter bands. And as for breaking things, when would that be useful?
The fact is that humans have an innate instinct for aggression AND an innate instinct for co-operation. I'm sick and tired of this bogus "human nature" argument which always emphasises the first.
Reading the comments on that website has certainly filled me with an urge to break things and kill people.
Well not really, but still- the ignorance on display there is almost as vile as whatever Derbydouche has to say.
If someone has an uncontrollable urge to break things & kill people, they are not just "responding to ... innate male urges." They are a psychopath.
Also, the Night Witches would like a word with you.
"Honey, I have to go overseas and have my balls shot off, or else the rest of the guys will think I'm too afraid to go overseas and get my balls shot off." - George Carlin.
That's all that came to mind.
YIKES - i haz been doin it rong !
I build and repair stuff, no killing.
*checks * yup I am a man.
Who exactly "designated" women as a victim group ?
Confused?
