Worshippers who believe in the 12 gods of ancient Greece are trying to stage a ceremony at the Temple of Zeus in Athens on Sunday...
The president of the Association of Greek Clergymen, Father Efstathios Kollas, has described the followers of the Olympic gods as a handful of miserable resuscitators of a degenerate dead religion who wish to return to the monstrous dark delusions of the past.

I for one welcome this. Because, hey, it's their life, their religion is no less ridiculous than the mainstream ones, and it may just make people realize how dumb the bigwig religions are.
Yes, I´ve lived in Greece and unfortunately these are the comments. Of course, this guy is very selective. He seems to forget that the same arguments were sprouted by fundamentalist Catholics back in 1976 in Spain when the first Orthodox Church was built. Double standards?
The president of the Association of Greek Freethinkers, Eugenios Pamphilos, has described the followers of the Christian trinity as a handful of miserable resuscitators of a degenerate dead religion who wish to return to the monstrous dark delusions of the past.
There fixed.
Well, all I'll say about people who worship the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, or other such pantheons, is that A) at least their religions are interesting and B) They generally have gods dedicated to sex, drinking, and generally having a ripping good time.
If I were religious, I'd have to choose a faith like this.
MK: Yeah, but every time I see a sentence that refers to eyes and beams, all I can think of is Cyclops (of the X-Men, not of Greek myth).

I've heard the Greeks and the Egyptians are much the same about their ancient religions, actually -- the more it's linked to them, the more they try to force it into the distant past and focus on their current religious beliefs. It's really very depressing, and probably goes a long way towards explaining why neither one of them is anything resembling a world power, despite their incredibly rich histories.
That said, I have to root for the neopagans. I don't really have a lot of respect for their beliefs, but any civilized modern nation should acknowledge their right to have them, and the good Father Kollas can yammer all he wants about it as long as the Greek government has the smarts to ignore him.
(But then again, the Greek government also tried to ban video games a couple of years ago, so I don't know that I should be that confident.)
Yes, because Classical Greece was monstrous, dark and delusional, unlike say what the current Christian fundies are pushing for by getting creationism taught as science in schools. *head desk*
I read the first half and thought, "That's not fundie, belief in the Olympiad is just as unscientific as belief in the Abrahamic god."
Then I read the second part and nearly died laughing.
... I for one am behind this. The Greek Gods are far more interesting, understandable, and worthy of being worshipped than Master Skydaddy. Not that I believe in any of it, mind, but if I were one to, I'd definitely go for the former before the latter.
And I am laughing so hard at the Father's statement. Uh, so, about your religion...
Adrian: Exactly. And you could figure out their justifications. Hera? Definitely had mental issues, and no wonder. God? Definitely had mental issues, but... who knows what was up his ass.
So your 2004 Athens games were crap (construction of the main event sites - especially the Olympic Stadium - completed just a week before the games' start), and our 2012 London Olympics were completed six months ahead of schedule, and £1 billion under budget?
Suck it, Father E-FSTDT-Atheos. The Gods - and especially Goddesses favoured us (one word: Nike; as in her on the front of the 29 Gold medals [65 total; medals table position: Third ] our athletes won).
...how many medals did Greece win? Two. Bronzes . Total. (medals table position: 75th. Even North Korea, with six medals - four Golds & two Bronzes - came higher in the table: 20th) [/hyper-smug & ultra-superior]
Deal with it.
Confused?
