The thing that scares me about society today is that we like to give up all the progress we've made. We want to give up religion, we want to give up nationalism, we want to give up capitalism... the irony is that so-called 'progressives' are the ones that want to give up this progress. Go figure.

I think I see what's confusing you, Sambo. See, when we talk about progress, we mean progress away from the mistakes of the past. Say it with me now: awaaaaaaay.

Sounds like what Gene Roddenberry envisioned, when he created "Star Trek": A utopian world united under one government - the United Federation of Planets (based in San Francisco), with no separate countries, nationalities, currencies - or religion. After all:

Gene's world sounds like the ultimate in progress (with, as shown in ST: TNG, DS9, VOY & ENT, Starfleet in the 29th Century having timeships, to enforce the Temporal Prime Directive, advancing further; boldly going where - and when - no-one has gone before.
