Also, considering the vast mass of humanity have held religious beliefs, both in the past and today, suggest that atheism is the abberation, not faith. It suggests that belief is normal, and that one would have to be “indoctrinated” in order not to believe.

Since Catholicis, Islam, buddism(or any isolated religion for that matter) is in the same position as atheism, your logic fails.
Maybe it is because in ancient times until not long ago organised religions offered explanations for many phenomena that could not be explained naturally, because science was not far enough or even science was not invented back then. Think of electricity.
It is not until the dawn of the 19th century that the common education got good enough in the developed parts in the world that many people see that science is able to explain a vast amount of phenomena, and for example bible accounts of the world get more and more irrelevant.
Back in the old times people turned to religion naturally. But now for many people being religious is the consequence of having been indoctrinated (preferably as a child).
"Also, considering the vast mass of lemmings follow one another off of cliffs, both in the past and today, suggest that lemmings who don't follow are the abberation, not cliff jumping followers. It suggests that group suicide is normal, and that one would have to be “independent” in order not to jump."
...fixed.
That's because every time someone goes "This big imaginary person in the sky will punish anyone who doesn't do as I say", they want people to believe them.
So the first thing to do is to paint anyone who thinks its a load of crock in the worst light possible, since that's the only way you can make your bullshit look good. Another common thing is to claim basic values such as "don't fuck up others if you don't want the same thing done to you" as their own, and scream (usually most hypocritically) that anyone disbelieving you doesn't follow these values that "you came up with"
Anyone with half a snail's brain should have no trouble figuring out why someone trying to convert others to their belief/behavior system and follow them and give their money to them could POSSIBLY have issues with people saying "that's bullshit".
"Also, considering the vast mass of humanity have raped (insert murdered/tortured/warred/whatever else), both in the past (and the situation now only reversed because the liberals made campain against rape, claiming it is wrong), suggest that not raping is the abberation, not abstaining from raping. It suggests that rapes are normal, and that one would have to be “indoctrinated” in order not to rape.
fix'd
My opinion is that all human infants share a fundamental awareness and native intelligence...enough to have a very good moral sense without external indoctrination. Leave the child to grow in a healthy fashion, and the resulting adult is the epitome of a social creature.
Do young happy children have a superior moral sense? I believe so...we learn from our elders how to lie, after all.
I believe that humans have a spiritual instinct, but that's moot.
Your argument from popularity fails.
Also, I can conclusively state that I don't believe, and I was never "indoctorinated" not to believe. I was simply not indoctorinated to believe and thus was able to see religion objectively for the nonsense it is. I wanted to believe, but saw not one shred of evidence that any religion is true and plenty of evidence that contradicts religions.
In ancient times, people didn't understand how things worked so they made up stories about how they worked, now we know about evolution and the big bang, we don't need stories anymore.
Technically speaking, normal is always the majority, and indoctrination is always the word that the majority throws at the minority.
In reality, indoctrination is whatever you teach your children as they're growing up, because it turns out there is no absolute moral right or wrong. We make it up as we go.
"It suggests that belief is normal, and that one would have to be “indoctrinated” in order not to believe. "
The majority of my family are Christians.
There was no indoctrination, whatsoever, involved in my being an atheist. I never had any god-belief at all.
So much stupid, so little time.
Most discoveries and social progress toss out ancient beliefs and superstitions. Shall we go back to the dark ages for you so that you can be comfortable with the "norm" of history?
BTW no one is born with religion. It has to be taught.
Aethernaut, I know that comment is years old, but the biologist in me has to point out: Lemmings are smarter than fundies/cultists. They don't commit mass suicide.
(Seriously, Disney created that myth. Look it up.)
All you can prove with that wide assertion is this. A religious belief has to indoctrinate it's followers against all competing beliefs or the lack of a belief.
Yes, you've been indoctrinated into a belief.
A lack of belief with all the attempts to indoctrinate is what marks an Atheist as a logical product of conflicting, contradicting and competing religions. Some say really looking into and actually reading the Bible is the quickest way to Atheism, looking into all religions or myths is the other way.
Know why Europeans have such high Atheist levels? Because they have comparitive religion classes and don't hide church atrocities in their history. America refuses comparision, introduction to other religion and church histories in their schools.
Also:
We'll never know how many people were actually believers in the past as coercion or forced acceptance was the norm. You just weren't allowed to speak against the belief, we see this enforcement still vigourously practiced in the Bible Belt.
In other words I expect Atheism or at least disbelief of church doctrine to be much higher then reported at any time in history.
“Also, considering the vast mass of humanity have held religious beliefs, both in the past and today, suggest that atheism is the abberation, not faith.”
Yes. Can’t argue that.
On the other hand, all these masses of humanity have believed in a variety of gods. Gods you don’t think are real, and wrong impressions of the gods you DO think are real, or the real god but worshiped in the wrong way. So, really, just a whole history of the vast majority of people being wrong, huh? You’re okay with that? Well, so am I.
I’m not an atheist because i think it’s the popular stance.
“It suggests that belief is normal,”
Yes, yes, let’s go by popularity. Because i THINK that Islam is more popular, world-wide, right? Certainly not the one religion of Christainity you hold dear.
“and that one would have to be “indoctrinated” in order not to believe.”
No. I faced no such indoctrination. I left the church because i was surrounded by Idiots. I looked for god for a long, long time. Eventually realized I’d lost all faith from sheer repetition of the same stupid arguments offered as proofs.
Confused?
