Finally a statement from Davey I can agree on on the surface. The Catholic church is one of the shadiest and most corrupt entities in human history and I wouldn't trust them with much of anything. And the Russian Orthodox church is the biggest whorehouse in the country, where the clerics sell their souls to those with power, instead of just their bodies for money. How unfortunate that he doesn't actually care about those real problems and is hyperfocused on tiny theological disputes like a backwards, self-important fanatic.

@SpukiKitty I think there's a weird disconnect happening between older catholics and newer catholics. People who were already sceptical after Vatican 2 probably left or stopped attending entirely, leaving the church in the hands of moderates and fundamentalists. But without an influx of more progressive clergy from the progressive wing, and with the old moderates dying out, the strictly indoctrinated have the church all to themselves. It probably doesn't help that John Paul II, although very popular, presided over a very long period of time and introduced a more conservative regime. Most priests nowadays are trained in this more dogmatic theology instead of the more lenient, permissive doctrine prevalent in the lead-up to Vatican 2. Making it worse was Benedict XVI, extending the conservative regime for several years.
There have been cases in the Netherlands were older parishioners clashed with their more conservative(!) new priests. Such as one that refused to allow his church to be used for the funeral service of an old member who had chosen euthanasia, even when another priest offered to hold it in his place. Another was of a longtime serving priests who was co-habitating with a woman and not really hiding the fact that they were in love. This was accepted for years by the bishop, who brushed it off as love being love. Then a new authority came in and the priest was ordered to either break up, or leave the priesthood. It wasn't a hard decision, of course. And the church lost another cool guy.
