After decades of cultivating a victim mentality ad nauseam, homosexual advocates are reduced to this argument: Foley's predatory behavior was, ultimately, OUR fault. Society (read: Bible-believing Christians and churches) is to blame. Once again the circular logic of what I call "gay fundamentalism" is exposed: whatever deviance, whatever threats to health, children and morality–all is laid at the door of "homophobic" society because of the "shame" we cause "gays" by not celebrating or at least not accepting their lifestyle choice. How convenient for them.
It seems as though gays are extremely prone to alchohol abuse problems, I mean this just keeps coming up over and over. In Holland, where gay marriage is legalized, the substance abuse problems are still the same. If they suffer from depression, why can't they take prescription medication instead?

Hey, the only person I blame for Foley's actions is Foley, and the only people I blame for covering it up are the people that covered it up. I can blame you, however, for being an asshat.
Er... the congressman in question's sexuality, I think, could more accurately be described as "fucked up." He certainly wasn't what most of the rational world consider to be a healthy gay man. If he was abused as a teenager, that goes some way to explaining his actions, though it doesn't excuse them. If his record for suppressing gay rights is anything to go by, his level of self-hatred must have been intense... either that or he's got a sexual perversion for young men and therefore equates that with being gay, in keeping with the philosophies of his peers.
And, it's "the Netherlands" in this century.
"homosexual advocates are reduced to this argument: Foley's predatory behavior was, ultimately, OUR fault."
Republicans are reduced to saying its the democrats fault, unless its the homosexuals fault. It obviously can't be the republicans fault for first electing perverts, then protecting them, then blaming someone else when they get caught.
I gotta say, I don't know anyone who is making apologies for Foley's behavior by blaming society for not celebrating the gay lifestyle, and I know a hell of a lot of rabid liberals. Every single one of them thinks Foley is a complete asshat.
It's the Republican conservatives that are making the excuses for him... so I do believe you have been hoisted by your own petard.
(GOD I've always wanted an excuse to say that...)
Huh?
Foley got caught doing a page boy or two. It has happened before, and will likely happen again.
It's Foley's fault, no one else's.
If the page was underage, Foley should be prosecuted, along with any Congressmen who were aware of the situation. Have a nice day.
"In Holland, where gay marriage is legalized, the substance abuse problems are still the same."
If gay marriages haven't had an effect on substance abuse what the hell is your point?
It seems as though fundies are extremely prone to REALITY abuse problems, I mean this just keep coming up over and over.
welll.... looks like after MB made a dozen or so personal attacks on everyone that posted a response, the thread got shut down by the admins.
Once again, gotta give some respect to CF mods for running a fair forum.
homosexual advocates are reduced to this argument: Foley's predatory behavior was, ultimately, OUR fault.
Where'd he get this? I haven't heard anyone (including Foley himself) blame Foley's behavior on anyone but Foley.
The controversy isn't about Foley's behavior; it's about whether the Republicans knew about it and swept it under the rug to protect their political asses instead of protecting the kids.
And do you have stats about the percentage of gays in Holland with sunstance abuse problems? Stats on gays with substance abuse problems here? No, I didn't think so.
"They" suffer from depression as a result of repression and constant attacks from people like you. (Mercyburst? Well, no, I don't sense a whole lot of mercy from you at the moment.)
Mark Foley's behavior was reprehensible. The actions his fellow REPUBLICAN Congresspeople and the House Speaker, Dennis Hastert took to cover up the problem were also reprehensible.
Nothing you say changes the fact that Foley is a Republican CHRISTIAN and so were the people that ignored the problem.
Moral high ground my ass.
After decades of cultivating a victim mentality ad nauseam...
Yeah, I agree. Why can't Christians stop whining? They control all of the government and make up most of the population; how the hell can they still insist they're being "persecuted?"
...homosexual advocates...
*spit take*
...are reduced to this argument: Foley's predatory behavior was, ultimately, OUR fault.
Foley's actions were, ultimately, Foley's fault. JUST Foley's fault. Unfortunately, far too many Christians are homophobic bigots. Bigots very frequently like to generalize individuals to groups and claim that an individual's actions were caused by membership in the group. For example, a bigot with an irrational hatred of gay people will, when a gay person does something wrong, assume and insist that his wrongful actions were caused by his sexual orientation.
Society (read: Bible-believing Christians and churches) is to blame.
Bible-thumpers do not make up society, if that's what you were implying.
That said, being forced to live in denial of who you are and even speak out against a group to which you belong can do stuff to you. Imagine if Christianity were viewed in a negative light it wasn't illegal, but you would be discriminated against if anyone knew you were Christian and it were illegal to perform Christian celebrations or prayers in public. Imagine spending your life in denial, publicly denying your Christianity, refraining from the prayers and celebrations, terrified that someone might find out that you were Christian, and even being pressured by your peers to speak out against Christianity. Eventually, you would probably find yourself as messed up as Foley.
Except that you wouldn't stand for that kind of thing. You complain of persecution even when you're controlling the government. If Christianity were restricted like that, you wouldn't care that your "lifestyle" was deemed unacceptable. You would be leading the fight for equal treatment, even though you insult other people for doing the same thing now.
Once again the circular logic of what I call "gay fundamentalism" is exposed:
Gay fundamentalism?

...whatever deviance, whatever threats to health, children and moralityall is laid at the door of "homophobic" society because of the "shame" we cause "gays..."
I know you've got a very simple mind, but we're dealing with two different issues here. What anyone does is their own fault, gay or straight. However, forcing people to live in the closet may cause them to do things that are wrong. We're not discussing "fault," we're discussing ways to reduce the problem.
Since the topic of sexual orientation makes you get all foamy and insane, how about we change the subject to robbery. Stealing is always wrong. If you steal, it's your fault, not society's. However, if we make sure that no one lives in complete poverty, there will be fewer robberies. The more people there are living in poverty, the more crime there will be. Society should reduce poverty as much as possible not because the resulting robberies are "their fault" but because it will reduce future crime. After all, if someone robs you, you'll probably find little solace in knowing it's "their fault."
Similarly, if more people live in denial, there will be more crime. None of the crimes are "society's fault," but society should still avoid forcing people to live in denial because that will reduce crime.
...by not celebrating...
No one is asking you to "celebrate" homosexuality, Dullard. We're simply asking you to keep your overgrown nose out of other people's bedrooms, weddings, and private business.
...or at least not accepting their lifestyle choice.
Homosexuality is not a choice, you dimwit! For that matter, it's not a lifestyle either.
Homosexuality is a sexual orientation. A sexual orientation is, basically, a set of attractions. If you're attracted to the opposite sex, you're heterosexual. If you're attracted to the same sex, you're homosexual. Your sexual orientation is inborn. It has a genetic component, at least for men, and it is also partially determined by prenatal hormone levels. Sexual orientation certainly can't be chosen, and it doesn't imply a lifestyle either. Sexual orientation can only have any direct effect on a small part of your lifestyle the sex of your romantic partner or partners, assuming you choose to have one or more. Even then, sexual orientation doesn't completely determine this; many homosexual people marry women because society teaches them that being gay is somehow "wrong" and shames them into denying their homosexuality and going into the closet.
How convenient for them.
Rule #624: If you want to excercise your right to make a smug remark because you're correct, make sure that you really are correct.
It seems as though gays are extremely prone to alchohol abuse problems...
Sorry, saying "it seems" instead of "it's a fact" is not enough to cover the ass that you pull this "fact" from.
Although persecuted minorities are the kinds of people who suffer from substance abuse problems, so this may be somewhat true within the US. I still doubt it, though.
...I mean this just keeps coming up over and over.
O RLY?
In Holland...
It's called "The Netherlands."
...where gay marriage is legalized...
...because they don't have as many conservative asshats like you...
...the substance abuse problems are still the same.
Substance abuse problems in the Netherlands are probably lower than they are here. Of course, keep in mind, the Netherlands don't regulate peoples' personal matters as much the US is still stuck in Prohibition, but the Netherlands doesn't try to stop people from using harmless substances like marijuana, for example.
If they suffer from depression, why can't they take prescription medication instead?
Some homosexual people actually do suffer from depression, and many of those that do take medication for it. Straight people also suffer from depression and take medication for it. (Depression runs in my family. I have two gay cousins, although only one is a blood relative. She, however, does not suffer from depression.)
Keep in mind, though, that there is a difference between clinical depression and the feeling of sadness often called "depression." Clinical depression is caused by a hormonal imbalance or something of that sort, and can be treated with medication. If you feel down (and "depressed" in the colloquial sense) because half of the population of your country hates you or even considers you a criminal because of an inborn trait, denies you basic rights for having that trait, and heaps scorn upon you or even attacks you for "choosing" to be born into a minority, that's not clinical depression. That condition should be treated by passing laws granting equal rights to everyone and heaping strict penalties upon discriminatory practices. Suggesting we should give antidepressants to gays who are tired of being persecuted is just disgusting.
Confused?
