I don't think they would even have counted as "fake Jews". They were just people who practised Judaism in a way that wasn't Jesus's style (And note Jesus's style is not a generally recognized form of Judaism). Jesus even called out Jews who reprimanded him for not observing the Jewish sabbath. That's right, he complained when other people were being too Jewish!

"Some person that supposedly lived about two millennia ago (whose existence I cannot prove), would (if he were alive today and a lot closer than the Middle East, but here on a continent he never heard of), if he met Barack Obama (hope he's got a clean robe before that White House dinner), would have told him he was a liar and a hypocrite (but of course I am just imagining what might be in the minds of TWO people that I've never met)."
