[Discussing the upcoming movie "300"]
Wikipedia is made of entries that online users write...it's probably the worst source of information and least credible as far as accuracy on practically anything....try reading an original source or even books by Stephen Pressfield who wrote Gates of Fire about the battle. And as far as "good" and "bad" guys...every society and culture has an evil side to it. Veer away from God and His commandments and you're doomed. Persia and Greece's (along with Rome's and Babylon's) empires were already prophecied to be destroyed when Nebechenedzzer (sp?) had his dream interpreted by Daniel in the book of Daniel in the Bible. You can't take sides. God destroyed BOTH the Persians and the Greeks because BOTH were evil.

Now I've been looking forward to 300 for some time, so on king Leonidas's behalf:
Go fuck yourself with a rusty, salt covered, burning gladius, dipped in alcohol.
Wikipedia is actually amazingly accurate. Incredibly enough.
How that is, the Internet, its users, and humans in general being what they are, I truly have no absolutely idea.
You fail for so many reasons. Here's a few
1) Nebechenedzzer was like all other prophets. A fake whoes predictions were so vauge they had to come true eventually when people had enough history to fill in the blanks worth.
2) Persia, Greece, and Rome all predate Christianity. So why would God punish them for not believing in him when he didn't show himself or his son to them? Also Rome fell after it was Christian, Persia lasted almost into the 20th Century before Western powers split it up, and Greece was conquered by the Macedonians and then the Romans, who were also pagan.
Wikipedia's accuracy is variable, actually. High profile articles tend to be quite accurate, whereas lower profile articles tend toward being inaccurate. Wikipedia is a good place to start, though checking the sources is a good thing to do with any article. That being said...
Yeah, God destroys a lot of things.
Yeah, old "Nebby's" dream predicted the utter destruction of Tyre, which is currently home to some 20,000 people. Good "prophecy" there.
300 is gonna kick ass.
"[...]God destroyed BOTH the Persians and the Greeks because BOTH were evil."
The guy was already unsympathetic to me, but this takes the cake. Destroying two of the greatest civilisations this earth has known, the guy is a moron.
dude i really want to go to a christian school. imagine history class: "well, the persians and the greeks got into a battle, then god killed them all off for sinning. your homework for tonight is to pray."

If I remember correctly, studies have shown that Wikipedia's factual accuracy is roughly the same as that of ordinary paper encyclopaedias, but with much, much, MUCH more depth. And it seems to me that the place is progressively getting more stringent and strict with regards to verifiability.

I don't think that's always the case. I find some high profile articles become hopelessly bogged down in debates and edit wars - which is why, despite my interest in political science, I don't touch any article on politics (except to correct the occasional typo or grammatical error). In contrast, some "unpopular" specialist subjects can be amazingly accurate because the only people who'd even bother to contribute are those with a strong interest in the subject; the problem is more positive bias towards the topic than factual inaccuracy.
In reguards to the movie "300". I dont care that it is going to be historical. i don't care that it will be waaaay off the mark in showing accurate Spartan and Persian culture.
I'm going to see it because I want a good, over the top, violent movie that look like someone brought Frank Frazetta's artwork to life.
Ok. First, the Greeks are still around. They haven't gone anywhere. Greece is still on a map. Also, the Persians probably came up with most of the bullshit you use to fuel your religious arguments. Zoroaster first came up with the concept of 'good and evil' and 'Heaven and Hell'. And how the hell can they veer away from a god they haven't even heard of? The Greeks probably didn't even know that the Ten Commandments ever existed, and the Persians treated the Hebrews pretty nicely, even if they didn't decide to bow down to their religion like some spineless idiots. If giving the people who came up with the idea of God the first bit of fair treatment in a long time is the definition of evil, then I need to rethink a lot of things. Or maybe you are just really fuckin' stupid.
Greeks: Conquered by the Romans (who adopted the Greek religion as their own). But allowed their own culture and language. Became a unified state after the fall of the Empire. Still speak nearly the same language as in ancient times (temporal changes permitting).
Persians: Ruled most of the middle east from 550BCE until after WWI. When economic pressure forced the Persian empire to dissolve and Persia officially became Iran.
They were both destroyed, huh?
Daniel's forged.
Next idiot.
Confused?
